20 Alums Make the First Forbes Fintech 50

There’s more to the Forbes Fintech 50 list than just an awesome logo featuring George Washington wearing wrap-around shades. Forbes compiled the list by soliciting information from 300 startups, then interviewing more than 150 CEOs, founders, and industry experts. To make the cut, companies were required to have operations in the U.S. and a viable product.*

Simply put, Forbes describes the companies on the list as “small firms destined to have a big impact on your financial future and possibly upend your portfolio.”

This year, 20 Finovate and FinDEVr alums made the cut:

  • Founded: 2012
  • HQ: London
  • Funding: $30 million
  • Customers: 14 large banks and 140 buy-side firms
  • FinovateFall 2014 demo

Credit Karma

  • Founded: 2009
  • HQ: Washington, D.C.
  • Exit: Purchased by Morningstar in 2014 for $52.5 million
  • FinovateFall 2015 demo

  • Founded: 2009
  • HQ: New York City, New York
  • Exit: Purchased by Northwestern Mutual in 2015 for $250+ million
  • FinovateFall 2013 demo

Personal Capital

*While the list excludes financial giants, Forbes included startups acquired by larger companies but operating independently.

Xignite Surpasses 50 Billion API Calls in a Single Month

So, how did you spend the summer?

Xignite announced today that it reached more than 50 billion API call-requests in July. The high mark broke the company’s previous records and affirms Xignite’s place among the major API cloud data-providers worldwide.

Xignite CEO and founder Stephane Dubois credits a tripling in API call volumes over the past year-and-a-half to the fact that both startups and larger FIs have become much more comfortable working with the cloud. “In the past, APIs have been downplayed and relegated as a solution to power small websites and applications,” Dubois said. “But now, the financial services industry realizes that good APIs backed by strong, open designs and native cloud architecture, like Xignite, can tackle the most mission-critical of applications.”

Xignite developer Anand Viswanathan talked about streaming financial data and future API delivery technologies at FinDEVr San Francisco 2015.

Xignite leverages the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud to process millions of API requests per hour. Matt Wood, general manager for product strategy at Amazon Web Services, pointed to the get-to-market speed of AWS, as well as the way the platform helps cut costs and enables FIs to “be more agile” as reasons why Xignite uses the technology.

Xignite drives financial apps for more than 1,000 companies in 55 countries. It maintains a collection of more than 1,000 market-data APIs drawing from more than 150 sources. Founded in 2006 and headquartered in San Mateo, California, Xignite launched its #FintechRevoluton API Ecosystem initiative in September, featuring more than 20 technology firms and accelerators. In October, OTC Markets Group announced that it would add Xignite as a provider of real-time Level 1 market data. And in June, Xignite announced that it would help four of its fellow Finovate alums—Betterment, Motif Investing, Personal Capital, and SigFigbring their technologies the Apple Watch.

Xignite developer, Anand Viswanathan last month discussed the future of streaming financial data at FinDEVr San Francisco 2015. Xignite also participated in FinovateFall 2015 in September, demonstrating its Cloud Streaming technology.

The #FintechRevolution Will Be API’d

An open Fintech ecosystem for developers could be imminent, at least if Xignite has anything to say about it.

Fresh off its FinovateFall 2015 appearance, the financial market-data provider to many of fintech’s most innovative companies is spearheading a new initiative, the #FintechRevolution API Ecosystem. The goal of #FintechRevolution—a partnership involving more than 20 other technology companies and accelerators—is to make it easier for developers to get their hands on the APIs and tools they need in order to bring their innovations to life.

Stephane Dubois, CEO and founder of Xignite, says the initiative “consolidates the best-of-the-best in the fintech API ecosystem. It will now be easier for firms, large and small, to start and grow financial services and fintech companies just by leveraging the APIs in the ecosystem.”

From left: Xignite CEO Stephane Dubois, founder, and Anand Vidwanathan, developer, demonstrated Xignite Cloudstreaming at FinovateFall 2015.

Xignite divided the API contributions from the founding members into workflow, analytics and data categories. And, as Finance Magnates reports, a special emphasis should be placed on what it calls “non-traditional” APIs, the ones embracing inclusion of social and sentiment data alongside more-familiar financial data. This social data includes everything from the portfolio-management APIs of Advisor Software to the trader-mood-data APIs of PsychSignal.

The APIs from all of the founding members of the API ecosystem are listed in an integrated, Xignite-powered API catalog for easy access. All APIs have been vetted, and sales-and-support teams from all Ecosystem members are knowledgeable and ready to field questions from developers.

See the full list of founding members of the #Fintech Revolution below. The names of those companies that are also Finovate and/or FinDEVr alums are in bold.

Other founding members include incubators, Draper University in Silicon Valley, Fintech Sandbox in Boston, Level39 in London, and ValueStream in New York City.

Speaking of the initiative and its importance to startups and enterprises alike, ValueStream founding partner Greg Neufeld says, “We wouldn’t be investing our time, relationships and capital if we didn’t believe that the transformative changes happening today are merely the tip of the iceberg.” Neufeld is calling for innovators in fintech to work together to “build a better and stronger moat for the future.”

Neufeld says the entire industry of financial services is being “reinvented from the ground up,” and added: “We’re excited to be a part of this movement.”

Xignite Unveils CloudStreaming to Stream Any Data to Any Device with Zero Footprint

XigniteThis post is part of our live coverage of FinovateFall 2015.

Financial market data specialist, Xignite is our next presenter of the morning.

Xignite CloudStreaming is a zero-footprint streaming solution that enables implementing the next generation of innovative financial applications. Traditional streaming services require co-locations, physical servers, dedicated lines, scalable production infrastructure, and complexities around ingesting a full data-feed such as proprietary legacy protocols and replay-and-recovery logic. With Xignite CloudStreaming, you can stream to any device just the data that you want through a simple HTTP GET call.
