LearnVest Acquired by Northwestern Mutual for More than $250 Million

LearnVest Acquired by Northwestern Mutual for More than $250 Million

Three-time Finovate Best of Show-winner LearnVest has agreed to be acquired by insurance giant Northwestern Mutual. As reported in Fortune.com, the company was bought for more than $250 million in cash.

LearnVest CEO and founder Alexa von Tobel said that her company’s acquisition by Northwestern Mutual will only extend her mission to bring “affordable, accessible, and delightful … unbiased financial planning” to a broader range of American households. Von Tobel will remain Chief Executive of the company, which will serve as an independent subsidiary of Northwestern Mutual, maintaining its LearnVest brand.

LearnVest combines a free, online PFM platform with the opportunity to work with professional, human financial advisors for a one-time set-up fee of $299 and $19/month for ongoing support. Tim Schaefer, executive vice president of operations and technology at Northwestern Mutual said, “We see that from an innovation standpoint, there’s a real opportunity to bring together cutting-edge technology with that human touch.”

And with Learnvest the second big finech acquisition of the week (Kofax being the first), it is all the more interesting to consider the take from Inc.com’s Jeremy Quittner, who suggested that acquisition may sometimes be a preferable “exit strategy” than an IPO for startups. LearnVest had raised $70 million in funding from 15 investors, according to Crunchbase, and was valued at more than a “cool quarter-billion” last spring during its most recent funding round.

LearnVest won Best of Show honors at each of its three Finovate appearances (FinovateFall 2011, FinovateFall 2012, and FinovateFall 2013). The company was founded in 2009 and is headquartered in New York City.

Finovate Alums Fill Ranks of KPMG’s Fintech Innovators for 2014

Draw up a list of the top fintech innovators of 2014. Got it? Now tell me how many of your top 50 companies are not just impressive companies in their respective fields, but Finovate alums, as well.

If you are global accounting and consulting group, KPMG, then the answer is “more than half.”

Of the 50 companies recognized by KPMG in its 2014 review of top fintech innovators, 27 have demoed their technologies at Finovate conferences. And of that 27, 13 have won Best of Show at least once.
50Fintechreport.jpg
The inaugural “50 Best Fintech Innovators” report is a joint venture between AWI Ventures KPMG Australia and the Financial Services Council (FSC).
The companies chosen were selected based on four factors: total capital raised, rate of capital raising, degree of sub industry disruption, and “degree of product, service, customer experience and business model innovation.”
Writing in an introduction to the report, AWI Limited CEO Ben Heap explained why fundraising played such a prominent part of the selection process.
“These assessment criteria reflect the fact that venture capital invested is a relevant measure of innovation which in turn fuels enduring competitive advantage,” he wrote.
“Venture capitalists seek this enduring competitive advantage over and above everything else.”
Here’s a breakdown of Finovate alums in the list, in order of appearance, along with links to their most recent demo video. Boldface indicates Best of Show winner.

Who’s Who in New York Fintech Scene Features Five Finovate Alums

Who’s Who in New York Fintech Scene Features Five Finovate Alums
FF2014ButtonLogo

With FinovateFall 2014 starting a week from today, you’ll have to forgive us if we’ve got a little New York on the brain.

But you’d have to admit that the latest roundup of the New York fintech scene’s “Need to Know” from AlleyWatch couldn’t be more timely.

Even better, not only does the lineup include five companies that have demoed at Finovate shows in the past, it also features a pair of alums that are presenting at the upcoming FinDEVr event in San Francisco, as well.
FinDEVr_logo

That would be CardFlight and Thinknum. Derek Webster, founder and CEO of CardFlight, and Thinknum Co-Founder Justin Zhen were two of the five alums featured in AlleyWatch’s “21 People in the New York FinTech Scene You Need to Know About.” CardFlight specializes in mobile POS technology that enables card-present transactions. Thinknum has designed a web-based platform that helps financial analysts leverage big data to better value companies.

Both companies will be presenting at FinDEVr at the end of the month. Bronze sponsor CardFlight will host a presentation at FinDEVr on Tuesday. Thinknum will be holding its FinDEVr workshop on Wednesday. And there’s still time to get your tickets and join us for the first fintech event for developers.
Also noted in AlleyWatch’s review of New York’s Fintech Who’s Who were Betterment Product Manager Nick Gavronsky, LearnVest founder and CEO Alexa von Tobel, and Market Prophit CEO Igor Gonta.
Betterment was a Best of Show winner at FinovateFall in 2010. LearnVest won Best of Show honors for its demo at FinovateFall 2013. And Market Prophit made its Finovate debut at FinovateSpring 2014 in San Jose.
