BioCatch and Google Cloud Bring Fraud Prevention Solutions to Expanding Markets

BioCatch and Google Cloud Bring Fraud Prevention Solutions to Expanding Markets
  • Digital fraud detection innovator BioCatch has forged a partnership with Google Cloud.
  • The two companies will leverage their new relationship to bring fraud prevention solutions to expanding markets, starting in Southeast Asia.
  • Israel-based BioCatch made its Finovate debut at FinovateFall in 2014.

A new partnership between financial crime prevention specialist BioCatch and Google Cloud will help extend fraud prevention solutions into emerging markets, starting with markets in Southeast Asia. The move comes in the wake of a report from the digital fraud detection innovator that noted rapidly growing incidents of financial cybercrime in the APAC region. BioCatch’s 2023 APAC Digital Banking Fraud Trends Report underscored one threat in particular: authorized push payment (APP) attacks – which the report noted accounted for 54% of all confirmed fraud cases.

APP fraud occurs when a fraudster fools a victim into transferring money to an account controlled by the fraudster. Social engineering-based fraud such as APP has grown in recent years. This is due to both the rise in popularity of peer-to-peer payment networks, as well as successful efforts to defeat previously dominant forms of fraud such as remote takeover of victim devices.

“The APAC market has seen a massive rise in advanced financial cybercrime, with criminals adopting sophisticated social engineering tactics that have proved difficult to foil in real-time with legacy security controls,” BioCatch’s head of the APAC market Richard Booth explained. “Pre-crime logistics visibility and criminal network intelligence are vital to combatting these threats.”

BioCatch helps companies deal with this shifting landscape of digital fraud threats. The company leverages behavioral biometric intelligence and machine learning to deliver real-time threat detection and prevention. Its signature solution, BioCatch Connect, offers integrated digital fraud, AML, and impersonation detection to help banks and financial services companies detect and identify both traditional and emerging fraud threats.

BioCatch Connect works on three levels. First, the solution’s fraud telemetry collection includes thousands of app, behavioral, device, network, and transactional signals from more than eight billion individual user sessions. Second, continuous behavioral sequencing applies advanced cognitive behavioral science, data modeling, and deep learning algorithms to analyze and score data from the solution’s fraud telemetry collection. Third, BioCatch Connect leverages predictive intelligence using AI models to validate user motivation and identify the risk of potentially fraudulent activity.

Headquartered in Israel, BioCatch made its Finovate debut at FinovateFall in 2014. In the years since, the company has grown into a leader in digital fraud detection and a pioneer in applying behavioral biometric intelligence, cognitive science, and machine learning to the challenge of fighting financial crime. More than 30 of the world’s biggest 100 banks and 180+ of the biggest 500 banks use BioCatch’s technology to manage fraud risks, facilitate digital transformation, and better engage their customers. Coinbase Partners with Google Cloud; Earns Regulatory Approval in Singapore

Coinbase Partners with Google Cloud; Earns Regulatory Approval in Singapore

Enthusiasm for cryptocurrencies has settled down from its peak a year ago. But innovation in the space continues undaunted. Today we learned that one of the pioneering companies in digital assets, Coinbase, has forged a strategic partnership with Google Cloud. The partnership calls for Coinbase to use Google Cloud as its strategic cloud provider for developing advanced exchange and data services. Google Cloud’s platform will enable Coinbase to process blockchain data at scale, and boost the international reach of its services courtesy of Google Cloud’s fiber optic network. Coinbase will also benefit from Google Cloud’s secure infrastructure and the company’s data and analytics capabilities.

“We are excited Google Cloud has selected Coinbase to help bring Web3 to a new set of users and provide powerful solutions to developers,” Coinbase CEO and co-founder Brian Armstrong said. “With more than 100 million verified users and 14,500 institutional clients, Coinbase has spent more than a decade building industry-leading products on top of blockchain technology. We could not ask for a better partner to help execute our vision of building a trusted bridge into the Web3 ecosystem.”

The partnership also means that Google Cloud will enable select customers to pay for its cloud services with designated cryptocurrencies. The functionality will be powered by Coinbase Commerce, which provides a decentralized way for merchants around the world to accept cryptocurrency payments. Further, Web3 developers will be able to access Google’s BigQuery crypto public datasets – powered by Coinbase Cloud Nodes – across leading blockchains. This will enable developers to operate Web3-based systems without requiring expensive and unwieldy infrastructure.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said the partnership would help make it easier and faster for developers to build Web3. Kurian highlighted the “scalability, reliability, security, and data services available via Google Cloud” which he said would enable developers to “focus on innovation in the Web3 space.” Google also announced that it will use Coinbase Prime for institutional crypto services such as secure custody and reporting.

Coinbase’s partnership news with Google Cloud comes as the cryptocurrency innovator announces that it has secured regulatory approval from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). The company received its In-Principle Approval (IPA) as a Major Payments Institution license holder, which will enable Coinbase to offer regulated Digital Payment Token products and services in Singapore. It’s worth noting that Coinbase is no stranger to the country. The company introduced the island nation as its technology hub last year. And over the past three years, Coinbase’s venture capital arm, Coinbase Ventures, has invested in more than 15 Singapore-based Web3 startups.

“Today’s announcement underlines our commitment to Singapore as a regional hub that allows us to unlock new capabilities for Singapore-based institutional and corporate clients in the future,” Coinbase’s Nana Murugesan wrote on the company blog this week. “Gaining this in-principle approval from MAS is an important step, as we plan to launch our full suite of retail, institutional, and ecosystem products.”

Coinbase made its Finovate debut in 2014 at FinovateSpring in San Francisco, California. Founded in 2012, the company now enables more than 100 million people and businesses to buy, sell, and manage cryptocurrencies. Coinbase has a quarterly trading volume of $217 billion, and $96 billion in assets on its platform. With partners in more than 100 countries, and 4,900+ employees, Coinbase is a publicly-traded company on the NASDAQ exchange under the ticker COIN and has a market capitalization of $16 billion.

Figure Eight Collaborating with Google Cloud on Machine Learning

Figure Eight Collaborating with Google Cloud on Machine Learning

AI data enrichment platform Figure Eight (formerly known as CrowdFlower) announced a collaboration this week with Google Cloud. Through the partnership, Figure Eight will serve as the data launch partner for Google Cloud AutoML, helping AutoML customers collect and prepare data and experiment with models.

Google Cloud’s AutoML is a set of machine learning tools that help developers leverage Google’s transfer learning and Neural Architecture Search technology to train machine learning models. These tools require developers to have little knowledge of machine learning and therefore allow for fast scalability.

To simplify the process for developers, Figure Eight will offer AutoML-specific templates to simplify the process of uploading training data to AutoML, as well as consultation services and guidance for developers. With these tools and resources, AutoML customers can create training data to train, test, and improve their machine learning models.

Figure Eight already provides training data to other Google teams, such as Jigsaw; the newly formed collaboration with AutoML is an extension of those capabilities. Figure Eight CEO Robin Bordoli said that the collaboration stems from a common mission of democratizing AI. “We’re excited companies can use the Figure Eight platform to create the necessary training data to deploy computer vision machine learning models faster, more effectively and at a larger scale without having to build an internal team of machine learning experts,” said Bordoli.

Founded in 2009 as CrowdFlower, the company rebranded to Figure Eight in April to refocus on AI and machine learning opportunities. At FinovateFall 2014, the company won Best of Show for its demonstration on how its crowdsourced workforce quickly collects, cleans, and labels financial transaction data to help banks curate a better customer experience. Headquartered in California, Figure Eight has raised $58 million from firms including K9 Ventures, Industry Ventures, Trinity Ventures, and Bessemer Venture Partners.
