Finovate Alums Populate the FinTech50

Looking for the most innovative startups in fintech? The FinTech50 is a great place to start.

FinTech50_homepage.jpg
It also turns out to be a great place to find Finovate alums. Of the 50 companies recognized by FinTechCity’s panels of judges as being “game-changers transforming the future of finance,” nearly half are alumni of Finovate conferences – including our upcoming event in London.
Here is the list of alums in alphabetical order:
According to Chris Skinner, who was one of the panelists, more than 700 companies competed for spots in the FinTech50. The selection panel included veterans of finance and technology from companies ranging from American Express and Google to Silicon Valley Bank and UBS. The FinTech50 winners were announced at an invitation-only event in London.
Speaking of London, Five Degrees, InvoiceSharing, Ixaris, mBank, and Trunomi will be in town next month, demonstrating their latest solutions at FinovateEurope 2015, February 10 and 11. More information on the event available here.

Trustly Announces $30 Million Investment from Bridgepoint Development Capital

Trustly, the Swedish payments company that began 2014 with a deal to make Groupon easier to use for customers at seven Swedish banks, is closing out the year with a €23 million ($30 million USD) investment courtesy of Bridgepoint Development Capital.

Carl Wilsson, Trustly CEO, said that the investment from Bridgepoint will help fuel the company’s European expansion. Trustly is live in eight European countries, and covers 57 banks representing 67 million consumers. The company currently processes more than seven million payments a year.

“We are delighted to partner with Bridgepoint, who will provide support and financial resources as we continue to grow and innovate,” Wilsson said. A partner at Bridgepoint, Johan Dahlfors, pointed to both the growth of the European online payments market and the B2B, B2C, and P2P-based payment tools developed by Trustly as support for his firm’s investment.
“The business is therefore well positioned in a growing market for online payment solutions,” Dahlfors said. “We look forward to working with the ambitious team to build out its European presence further.”
Trustly develops online and mobile banking payment solutions. The company specializes in enabling direct bank e-Payments, integrating its technology with FI’s existing online banking infrastructure to make paying online as easy as paying in person with cash.

The technology allows the merchant website to be visible throughout the payment process – a boon for both consumers and banks, as far as Trustly is concerned. The platform supports a wide range of authentication methods used by banks, as well, from MobileBankID to SMS codes.
Named one of the fastest growing technology companies in Sweden, Trustly’s recent headlines include the release of its open source, alternative messaging technology, BankAPI in September. In June, Trustly announced a partnership with PayPal to facilitate direct payments for online banking customers in Sweden and Denmark.
Trustly is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, and was founded in 2008. See the company’s 2013 FinovateEurope demo of Trustly’s direct, person-to-person bank payment solution here.

Trustly Extends Direktbetalning Product to Online Housing and Apartment Rentals

    TrustlyHiLogo.jpg

Sweden-based Trustly recently unveiled its online payment solution for house and apartment rental classified ads listed on Blocket, Sweden’s version of eBay.

This capability is being added to Trustly’s original offering, Direktbetalning, which was limited to purchasing and selling goods on the Blocket platform. You may recall Trustly’s FinovateEurope 2013 demo, where COO Carl-Henrik Somp was selling his right shoe.

    TrustlyRightShoe.jpg

The new offering helps solve the pain point faced by home renters who are pressured into paying rent for a new home or apartment one month in advance, only to discover that it was a scam.

Direktbetalning solves this problem in a similar way in which it does for goods sold online. Trustly holds the rent money until the day after the rental period begins, then pays it out to the landlord. If fraud occurs, rent money goes back to the tenant. It works like a small escrow, the only difference being that the payment is done in real time and payment is sent directly to the bank account of the recipient.

    TrustlyList2.jpg

Trustly currently supports all major banks in Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Spain. To learn more about Trustly, watch its FinovateEurope 2013 demo where it debuted Direktbetalning.
