FinDEVr Live: MX Describes How it Delivers Better Code to Developers

MXMX launched its core Digital Money Management (DMM) solution, MoneyDesktop, in October 2010. In just five years, MX has become one of the fastest-growing fintech companies and the DMM provider-of-choice to more than 550 banks and credit unions. MX is committed to building online and mobile financial software that entices consumers to increase their financial intelligence through a user experience that makes money management feel natural, simple and gratifying. As the industry is disrupted at a rapid pace, MX is committed to keeping financial institutions relevant and on the forefront of innovation.

How you build something is more important than what you’re building
Is your code simple, clean and maintainable? That’s the first question you should be asking rather than focusing on function. Studies have shown that up to 70% of the cost of software is incurred during maintenance. Readability, or the ease of reading source code, can promote software maintainability and is at the core of MX’s philosophy. In this 20-minute session, Brandon Dewitt, MX’s CTO, is discussing the fundamentals of building technology and how MX is delivering innovation and better code directly into the hands of engineers responsible for technology in their financial institutions.

Key takeaways:

  • Building a maintainable platform
  • Why style of code matters
  • Facilitating a smooth transition as you onboard new engineers

Just days away from its presentation at the FinDEVr developer conference next week, MX received a $4 million investment from CheckFree founder, Pete Kight.PeteKightIMG

Following this investment, Kight (pictured right) will join MX’s board of directors and will serve as an adviser to the company’s CEO, Ryan Caldwell.

Today’s investment brings the Utah-based company’s total raised to $54 million. In April of this year, USAA led MX’s most recent round, totaling $30 million. Prior to that, in November of 2014, it pulled in $20 million in seed funding.

MX, formerly known as MoneyDesktop, offers data aggregation, data cleansing, auto-categorization, classification, money management, custom APIs, data analytics, and marketing to help more than 550 financial institutions serve up a better user experience.

MX is one of 64 companies that will present its latest tools and APIs to a crowd of developers at FinDEVr in San Francisco next week. Brandon Dewitt, CTO of MX, will lead a presentation titled, How You Build Something Is More Important Than What You’re Building. Tickets for FinDEVr are available through early next week.

The company, founded in 2010, last demoed at FinovateFall 2014 in New York. Check out the video below.

MX Raises $30 Million in Series A Investment

MX Raises $30 Million in Series A Investment

MX_homepage

Five-time Best of Show award winner, MX, has boosted its total capital to more than $50 million with this week’s raise of $30 million. The Series A round was led by USAA (via a subsidiary), and featured participation from existing investor Commerce Ventures and new investor Digital Garage, based out of Tokyo.

TechCrunch’s coverage of the fundraising cites Pitchbook’s valuation of the company formerly known as “MoneyDesktop” at more than $270 million after this week’s investment.

The strategic implications of the investment in MX include the opportunity to bring its personal/digital finance management technology to the more than 10 million customers of USAA. Vic Pascucci, head of corporate development at USAA, said, “We see an opportunity for MX’s technologies to benefit our members, and our investment is one way we plan to explore that opportunity.”

FF2014_MX_stageshot_multipledevices

With Digital Garage onboard, MX will leverage the firm’s experience in helping companies like Twitter expand overseas to do some international expansion of its own. President and Group CEO Kaoru Hayashi called MX “a dominant force in the U.S.” and referred to financial institutions in Japan as being “hungry for (the) full-stack solutions” that MX can provide.

Headquartered in Provo, Utah (“the heart of Utah’s Silicon Slopes”), MX specializes in helping banks and financial institutions provide omnichannel, “customer-centric” banking experiences. MX was founded in 2010 by Ryan Caldwell (CEO), and partners with more than 500 FIs and 30 online banking, core, and payment network providers. Providing a “truly cross-platform” experience—the company’s last demo at FinovateFall 2014 featured the platform running on more than eight different devices—MX is better able to ensure that their technology will integrate seamlessly with an FI’s current system and processes.
