BBVA Taps Dwolla for Real-time Money Transfers

BBVA Taps Dwolla for Real-time Money Transfers

DwollaHomepage

BBVA Compass and Dwolla began their partnership in October 2014, when BBVA opened its network to the Iowa-based startup.

Today, the two disclosed the first stage of their plan. BBVA Compass is using the startup’s FiSync payments protocol for real-time money transfers. The Alabama-based bank is the largest FI customer to implement the technology.

Dwolla will implement FiSync’s authentication and tokenization processes developed jointly by the two parties. These security processes eliminate the need for customers to grant merchants direct access to their bank account, thereby disclosing account and routing numbers.

Starting today, BBVA Compass clients can send funds in real-time to other BBVA account holders or Dwolla users.

FiSyncSecureAuthThe partnership is also good news for developers. Those with a BBVA Compass account can use Dwolla’s APIs to create their own real-time payments apps. BBVA Compass Chairman and CEO Manolo Sánchez says the FiSync payments protocol will help the bank adapt to customers who are used to getting everything on-demand and instantly. Sanchez says that by working with Dwolla, “BBVA Compass is ensuring that money is able to keep up with the speed of the instant economy. This will have a real and lasting impact on businesses and consumers alike.”

BBVA is mimicking Dwolla’s pricing structure of $0.25 for transactions above $10, with everything under $10 free. The two companies plan to roll out additional updates in the coming months.

Dwolla demonstrated FiSync at FinovateSpring 2012. You can also catch them at the upcoming FinovateSpring show in San Jose next month.

Bank Innovation’s Coolest Brands of 2015 Features Finovate Alums

Bank Innovation’s Coolest Brands of 2015 Features Finovate Alums

BankInnovation_coolbrands2015

As if the challenge of developing innovative technologies were not enough, fintech companies today are also busy building brand identities that will help them stand out from the pack.

Bank Innovation took a look at brand identity in banking and banking technology. The result was a list of the 10 Coolest Brands of 2015 – half of which are Finovate alums.

The list runs the gamut from innovative startups doing interesting things with alternative currencies, to banks willing to take more and smarter risks than their rivals when it comes to leveraging financial technology to better serve their customers and clients.

Writing about the selection process, Bank Innovation’s Philip Ryan acknowledged the “ethereal” nature of the project: “like all brands, our list is based on nothing less than our ‘impressions,’ ‘feelings,’ and ‘beliefs.” At the same time, Ryan noted: “Mainly, we have relied on fact – what has been done and accomplished – for in the end the most profound determinant of a brand’s worth is what it yields.”

Here are the five Finovate alums that made Bank Innovations’ Coolest Brands of 2015. The full list is available here.

Also earning commendation were three other Finovate alums: Dwolla, Fastacash, and Fiserv.

2015 marked the fourth year in a row Bank Innovation has published its Coolest Brands in banking roundup (take a peek at their 2014 list here). Special congratulations to Venmo for making the list both this year and last.

Finovate Alums Fill Ranks of KPMG’s Fintech Innovators for 2014

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Finovate-F-Logo.jpg

Draw up a list of the top fintech innovators of 2014. Got it? Now tell me how many of your top 50 companies are not just impressive companies in their respective fields, but Finovate alums, as well.

If you are global accounting and consulting group, KPMG, then the answer is “more than half.”

Of the 50 companies recognized by KPMG in its 2014 review of top fintech innovators, 27 have demoed their technologies at Finovate conferences. And of that 27, 13 have won Best of Show at least once.
50Fintechreport.jpg
The inaugural “50 Best Fintech Innovators” report is a joint venture between AWI Ventures KPMG Australia and the Financial Services Council (FSC).
The companies chosen were selected based on four factors: total capital raised, rate of capital raising, degree of sub industry disruption, and “degree of product, service, customer experience and business model innovation.”
Writing in an introduction to the report, AWI Limited CEO Ben Heap explained why fundraising played such a prominent part of the selection process.
“These assessment criteria reflect the fact that venture capital invested is a relevant measure of innovation which in turn fuels enduring competitive advantage,” he wrote.
“Venture capitalists seek this enduring competitive advantage over and above everything else.”
Here’s a breakdown of Finovate alums in the list, in order of appearance, along with links to their most recent demo video. Boldface indicates Best of Show winner.
