A new partnership between mobile capture innovator Mitek and omnichannel digital banking solution provider Backbase will make Mitek’s document scanning and validation technology available via the Backbase Open Banking Marketplace. “Backbase is on a mission to deliver seamless digital banking experiences across all devices and channels,” company co-founder and CEO Jouk Pleiter said in a statement. “Our omnichannel banking platform easily enables banks to plug in best-of-breed fintech capabilities.”

The collaboration is an extension of the existing partnership between the two Finovate alums. Among the first to take advantage of the enhanced relationship between the two innovators is Malaysian financial service provider AmBank with more than six million customers. Sarah Clark, general manager for Identity Solutions at Mitek, called AmBank “just one example of how financial institutions can benefit from optimizing the digital experience with Mitek’s innovative and industry-leading technologies.”

Online currency exchange b-Sharpe announced it would deploy Mitek’s Mobile Verify last month, as well. In May, Mitek partnered with another Finovate alum, Avoka, integrating its Mobile Fill technology with the Avoka Transact platform to speed new customer acquisition, loan origination, and customer onboarding for banks. Mitek won Best of Show for its Mobile Photo Account Opening solution demonstrated at FinovateFall 2013. James DeBello is CEO.

Backbase, which took home Best of Show honors at FinovateFall 2016 last month, was founded in 2003 and is based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The company partnered with fellow Finovate alum Entersekt in August, bringing the company’s payment-authentication technology to its Open Banking Marketplace. The company’s digital banking platform was picked by India-based HDFC Bank earlier this month, selected by India’s IDFC Bank in August, and chosen by U.K.’s oldest bank, C. Hoare & Co., in May.

A new partnership will integrate Mobile Fill from Mitek with the digital sales-platform Transact from Avoka. The goal is to make it easier for financial institutions to acquire new customers, originate loans, and onboard customers.

Calling Mitek a “perfect fit” for its strategy to improve its sales platform, Avoka’s Chief Experience Officer Derek Corcoran said that license capture was a “huge step” in the direction of reducing friction during the account-opening process. Mitek chairman and CEO James B. DeBello added that the solution is being introduced by a “top 10 global bank” for retail account opening. “The pre-built integration will make it easy for this and other financial institutions to quickly deploy a comprehensive account-opening solution that will exceed customers’ expectations for a simple, easy-to-use, mobile onboarding experience,” DeBello said.

At FinDEVr 2016 in New York, Avoka discussed its Transact platform in a presentation, “Agile Design for Customer Acquisition.”  Philip Copeland is CEO.

Stephen Ritter Joins Mitek as Chief Technology Officer

Stephen Ritter Joins Mitek as Chief Technology Officer

Mitek_homepage_Mar2016

Mitek has hired Stephen Ritter as its new chief technology officer (CTO). Ritter joins the company after serving as SVP of engineering and research for Emotient, which was acquired by Apple in January.

“I am excited to lead the Mitek Labs and engineering teams, and help create the future of mobile commerce,” Ritter said. As CTO, Ritter will leverage his 25 years of experience and—in the words of Mitek CEO and president James DeBello—his “passion for creating game-changing technology” to drive development of Mitek’s mobile capture and identity-verification technologies.

StephenRitter_MitekPrevious to Emotient, Ritter (right) worked as CTO and VP engineering at Cypher Genomics, which was acquired by Human Longevity. Before that he was VP of engineering at Websense and senior director of engineering at McAgee. He is a graduate of University of California, San Diego, where he earned a B.S. in cognitive science.

The personnel news for Mitek comes at the same time that the company is taking its technology global. Earlier this month, Mitek announced that its Mobile Deposit solution was now available in the U.K., and that other countries would follow soon. March has also been a month of adoptions for Mitek, with a leading platform provider deploying Mitek’s Mobile Fill solution to improve its onboarding process, and a top-five U.S. bank choosing Mitek’s Mobile Deposit for business multi-check capture. Mitek’s Mobile Verify solution won the Innovation Showcase Award at the BAI Payments Connect event last week.

Founded in 1985 and headquartered in San Diego, California, Mitek demonstrated its mobile photo account opening for mobile web and its mobile photo driver’s license authentication technology at FinovateSpring 2015.
