Yoyo Wallet is Prepared for Liftoff (But Not in a SpaceX Explosion Sort of Way)

Yoyo Wallet is Prepared for Liftoff (But Not in a SpaceX Explosion Sort of Way)

Screen Shot 2016-09-05 at 11.34.06 AM

The mobile wallet market in the U.S. is being inundated with apps from Samsung Pay, Apple Pay, CVS Pay, Wells Fargo Wallet, Xiaomi’s Mi Pay, and many others. Meanwhile, London-based Yoyo Wallet with its slow-and-steady approach is starting to take off with both merchants and consumers.

You might think of Yoyo Wallet as the Venmo of the mobile-wallet industry since the app has struck a nerve with millennials. The mobile wallet generates a unique QR code for each transaction and allows retailers to in-build rewards and loyalty to incent first-time customers and encourage repeat business.

The startup was recently featured in Fusionwire, which interviewed Yoyo’s cofounder and CRO Michael Rolph, who said:

Over the last six months we’ve gone through this evolution that I think is fairly unique in any company’s life cycle. We’ve probably done the most important work of our lives over this time in order to lay the foundations for scaling. We’ve signed some pretty monumental deals; deals we might well look back on in years to come and say: ‘That was the turning point.’ It’s the exciting part now … you know you’ve got something, the question is: How big can you make it? This scaling-up phase will be very challenging, but that also makes it huge fun to be part of.

Rolph went on to describe Yoyo’s growth since launching, explaining that within the next few months, the company will have a workforce of 40 people, which is double the number Yoyo employed just 12 months ago. “We’ll need for all of us to be at the top of our game,” he said, since he expects Yoyo’s user-base numbers to balloon beginning next year.

Yoyo processes 400,000 transactions per month for mobile wallet users at 65 U.K. universities, 150 large corporate offices—including Accenture, JP Morgan, Visa, and HP—and retail locations. By the end of this year, the company expects to expand to 100 universities and 250 corporate offices.

Yoyo debuted at FinovateEurope 2015. Since then, the company has made inroads into Asia after launching at National University in Singapore. In late 2015, the company quietly began rolling out with partners in the U.S. As for what’s next, Rolph mentioned that the company is close to launching with “several very well-known retailers with a strong presence across the U.K., and specifically London.”

Finovate Alums Dominate The FinTech50’s Inaugural Hall of Fame

Finovate Alums Dominate The FinTech50’s Inaugural Hall of Fame

Fintech50_homepage_April2016

FinTechCity unveiled its new FinTech50 Hall of Fame this week at the Money 20/20 event in Copenhagen, Denmark. Finovate alums took six out of the ten spots.

The “founding ten members” of TheFinTech50 Hall of Fame are companies that “have featured on our radar since the days when they could reasonably be called startups,” say FinTech50 founders Julie Lake and Nicky Cotter, writing in The FinTech50 2016 Yearbook. “In recognition of their pioneering spirit and competitive staying power, we felt they deserved their own special place within a list of remarkable game-changers,” the founders wrote.

FinTechCity also presented The FinTech50 2016, its roster of the fifty hottest FinTech businesses in Europe. Of the 50 companies selected by the panel of more than 30 industry experts who poured over more than 1,200 candidates, a full baker’s dozen were Finovate—or FinDEVr—alums.

Read the full list.

Lake and Cotter called this year’s competition “the most hotly contested FinTech50 in its four-year history.” The founders also highlighted differences from the 2015 list, with this year’s roster featuring more companies innovating in “security, compliance, and risk.”

Also noteworthy was the number of European fintech companies from the United Kingdom (more than 30 out of the 50). The founders credited this to the U.K.’s broader access to funding, as well as the region’s local talent, and “favorable regulatory environment.” Lake and Cotter also praised other emerging European fintech communities in Amsterdam, Berlin, and Stockholm.

In addition to The FinTech50 2016 and its new Hall of Fame, FinTechCity also announced its FinTech20 India and FinTech20 Hong Kong. Finovate alums were represented here with Demystdata (FinovateAsia 2012) earning a spot in the Hong Kong 20, and Bank Bazaar (FinovateAsia 2012) getting recognition in the India 20. Lastly, The FinTech50 shared “The Hot Ten,” a roster of companies on their watch list for 2016. Here, Finovate alum, Ormsby Street (FinovateFall 2015), was recognized on that list.

The mobile payments and loyalty platform Yoyo today announced its U.S. launch plans.

According to the announcement on TechCrunch, the London-based company has been quietly rolling out with a private beta to a handful of U.S. partners.

Yoyo plans a full, public launch in the U.S. in Q1 2016.

The company first piloted its mobile wallet at Imperial College in London, and has since expanded to 15 more British universities, as well as other closed environments, such as airlines and cafeterias. Yoyo processes 200,000 transactions per month, which makes it the U.K.’s second most popular mobile payments app.

In April 2015, Yoyo raised $10 million from Imperial Innovations (an affiliate of Imperial College), and individual investors Taavet Hinrikus, Philip Riese, and Michael Tobin. In all, the company’s funding totals $24 million.

Yoyo debuted at FinovateEurope 2015 in London. Check out its live demo video or Finovate Debuts feature to learn more.

Britain’s Second Largest Mobile Wallet, Yoyo, Pulls $10 Million in Funding

Britain’s Second Largest Mobile Wallet, Yoyo, Pulls $10 Million in Funding

YoyoHomepage

YoyomobileapployaltyU.K.-based Yoyo announced a $10 million Series A round of funding today, bringing the startup’s total to $15 million. The round was led by Imperial Innovations, an affiliate of Imperial College, where Yoyo piloted its mobile payments app. Investors Taavet Hinrikus, Philip Riese, and Michael Tobin also contributed.

The startup will use the funding to bolster engineering and expand its team.

Yoyo also plans to expand internationally and hopes to launch at five U.S.-based colleges by the end of 2015. Yoyo piloted operations at Imperial College in London. The mobile wallet is now available at 15 other British universities, where Yoyo payments total up to 50% of all transactions on campus.

Yoyo’s platform, which is aimed at closed environments such as universities and airlines, sees 150k transactions per month. This earns it a spot as one of Britain’s largest mobile wallets, second only to Starbucks’ payment app.

The mobile payments app boasts convenience, and its built-in reward system keeps customers coming back. Yoyo has a stickiness rate of 80% and, on average, its users spend more than non-users.

We covered Yoyo in our Finovate Debuts series earlier this year. The company unveiled its mobile wallet technology at FinovateEurope 2015 in London.
