Finovate Alums Populate the FinTech50

Looking for the most innovative startups in fintech? The FinTech50 is a great place to start.

FinTech50_homepage.jpg
It also turns out to be a great place to find Finovate alums. Of the 50 companies recognized by FinTechCity’s panels of judges as being “game-changers transforming the future of finance,” nearly half are alumni of Finovate conferences – including our upcoming event in London.
Here is the list of alums in alphabetical order:
According to Chris Skinner, who was one of the panelists, more than 700 companies competed for spots in the FinTech50. The selection panel included veterans of finance and technology from companies ranging from American Express and Google to Silicon Valley Bank and UBS. The FinTech50 winners were announced at an invitation-only event in London.
Speaking of London, Five Degrees, InvoiceSharing, Ixaris, mBank, and Trunomi will be in town next month, demonstrating their latest solutions at FinovateEurope 2015, February 10 and 11. More information on the event available here.

With more than 280 companies applying, and 47 companies selected to compete, the Innotribe Startup Challenge is down to the top 15 companies that will move on to the Grand Finale. And six of the companies to advance are Finovate alums.

Sibos

The Innotribe Startup Challenge is part of Sibos, the conference held by SWIFT each year. The goal of the Challenge is to help what the contest categorizes as “startups” and “innovators” get access and exposure to the broader fintech community. Events are held in London, Singapore, and New York during which competing companies pitch their innovations to industry experts and fintech investors.

The Grand Finale will be held on October 1 at Sibos. The winning companies – one “early stage startup” and one “growth-stage innovator” – will receive a prize of $50,000 USD.
The six Finovate alums among the finalists are below.

China Loves Mambu: Microfinance Network Picks Cloud Banking Platform for SME Lending

Global microfinance network Opportunity International (OI) has selected Mambu as its core banking platform for small business lending in China.

According to OI CIO Robert Westcott, the fact that Mambu would help them launch more products and services to more clients faster and more efficiently was a key selling point. OI China is particularly interested in reaching markets in rural areas of the country and, as both cloud-native and mobile-friendly, Mambu’s technology was viewed as the “perfect solution.”

Mambu_homepage_new
Mambu, in the words of company CEO Eugene Danilkis, is a “cloud, SaaS, core banking application” that enables a variety of types of financial organizations to launch and service loan and deposit products. With an emphasis on speed, scalability, and simplicity, Mambu is designed to respond to what Eugene says is the “nearly two-thirds” of SMEs – and micro businesses – that are not well-served by “inflexible” legacy banking systems.
Opportunity International provides SME loans ranging from $20,000 to $1 million USD. The non-profit organization employs more than 17,000, and provides financial services and training to more than 5 million clients in 22 countries.
Mambu currently works with more than 100 institutions in 30 countries around the world, representing more than one million accounts. The company was recently in the headlines with news that the micro finance program at Yale University had adopted its platform. Mambu demoed its technology at FinovateAsia 2013 in Singapore.

Yale Microfinance Program to Deploy Mambu Platform

Thumbnail image for MambuLogo.jpg

You know what kids love these days? Microfinance.

At least that’s true of the kids at Yale University’s student-run micro finance program, the Elmseed Enterprise Fund. The fund supports local entrepreneurs with advice and micro loans. In 2013, the program provided consulting for 38 clients and provided more than $13,000 in loans to five.

The student volunteers at Elmseed also love a good deal when they see one. And when they went looking for a better way to handle their customer data., the solution they found was Mambu.
Mambu_homepage.jpg
Fund CEO Jadon Montero said, “Mambu’s platform will help us manage our client information better, which means our volunteer advisors can spend more time helping clients and less time worrying about the paperwork.”
Elmseed_Fund_homepage.jpg
The Elmseed Enterprise Fund was founded in 2001 with an award of $10,000 from a contest held by the Yale Entrepreneurial Society. As part of the arrangement with Mambu, the Fund will deploy the company’s Software-as-a-Service platform and receive a service credit of $100,000.
CEO and co-founder of Mambu, Eugene Danilkis said, “Programs such as Elmseed Enterprise give the next generation of micro finance professionals the opportunity to develop their skills and give something back to their local community at the same time.”
mambu_homepage_microfinan.jpg
Working with micro finance organizations is nothing new for Mambu. The company recently announced a partnership with Mexican micro-lender Kueski, following up on a September deployment with another micro lender from the area, CrediPeso. Mambu is a member of the SEEP Network, a global network of more than 100 international practitioner organizations focused on alleviating poverty through financial inclusion.
Mambu demoes its native, cloud-based, SaaS banking application at FinovateAsia last November. See the technology at work here.
