FidorBank_FinDEVr2015_logoFidor Bank introduced community banking more than five years ago and were early enablers of Bitcoin and Ripple. Now we are the first bank to offer open RESTful APIs secured with OAuth2.0, giving customers and partners direct access to our services and customer base.

Fidor Bank is a fully licensed online bank with both a user-oriented and tech-driven mindset. We strongly believe in partnerships. Most fintechs need banks because of regulation and processing. Fidor Bank provides both regulative support and technology. Fidor Bank is privately owned. We are located in Germany, United Kingdom, Russia, and are currently preparing market entry in the U.S.

Munich-based Fidor Bank Launches in U.K.

Munich-based Fidor Bank Launches in U.K.

FidorHomepage

Adding to the 215+ banks that call Britain home, Fidor Bank launched in the U.K. last week after applying for a banking license in January 2015. This makes Fidor the country’s first new retail bank in five years.

The Germany-based bank, which was founded in 2009, has set itself apart from traditional banks in multiple facets:

  • Was among the first banks to enable its customers to buy and sell bitcoin on its platform (with partnerships such as Ripple).
  • Has a community page that serves as an open forum, where users and bank representatives discuss bank products.

FidorCommunity

  • Is heavily involved in Facebook and Twitter, offering increased interest paid on savings accounts if users Like or Tweet certain content.

FidorBankFacebook2

  • Has an open platform it developed in-house, which enables developers to access 25 different services through a set of open APIs.

Fidor’s U.K.-based bank is off to a somewhat more cautious start. It doesn’t offer bitcoin services, although it is exploring interest among the U.K. community. Similarly, it has not opened up its U.K. system to developers, although Fidor’s existing Euro APIs can be used until the bank launches a wider integration.

Fidor is currently focused on developing a current account and savings-bond service, and will soon launch additional features, such as a debit card and mobile app. Additionally, the bank soon plans to roll out other fintech partnerships.

FinDEVr2015LogoV2DateFidor is among the 60+ companies that will present at FinDEVr San Francisco 2015 on 6/7 October. Fidor’s presentation will focus on teaching developers how to leverage its APIs and European banking license to set up their own digital banking services. There’s still time to register for the event, which will be held at the UCSF Mission Bay Conference Center in San Francisco.

FinDEVr2015LogoV2DateFinDEVr Previews highlight companies presenting new developer tools, platforms and integrations at FinDEVr 2015 San Francisco, 6/7 October. Early bird savings end Friday, so pick up your tickets today.

Fidor Bank introduced community banking five years ago. We embraced bitcoin and Ripple two years ago. Now we are the first bank to offer open RESTful APIs with OAuth2.0, which give direct access to our services and customer base. Stefan Weib, head of APIs, will talk about the vision, the current implementation status, challenges and solutions.

FidorBank_homepage_Sep2015

Why it’s a must see

Most fintechs still need banks because of regulation and processing. Fidor Bank provides both regulatory support and strong technology. The presentation will show the ease and beauty of Fidor’s APIs. Weib will share important learnings from one year of developing and providing APIs in a high-risk environment.

Check out more of today’s FinDEVr previews:

The Bank as an Operating System (bankOS)

The Bank as an Operating System (bankOS)

fidor_os_slide

Germany’s Fidor Bank, one of the three or four most-progressive financial institutions on the planet (and a FinDEVr presenter next month) uses an interesting term when discussing its strategy with developers and third parties. They call it the FidorOS (bank as an operating system). Here’s how it’s described on the bank’s tech site:

Public APIs serve as a welcoming front door to new business clients. Fidor seeks B2B clients to do for banking what Apple did for mobile applications with iTunes. Easy to use; easy to integrate. The Fidor operating system is API-based.

I’m not sure the general public will ever think of their bank as an “operating system” (ChaseOS?), but it’s a good way to describe what the most developer-friendly FI and fintech players are looking to accomplish.

fidor_tool_iconWill it work? Absolutely. Financial websites/apps will be stitched together with APIs just like every other website. Most banks already use at least one API, a third-party map to lay out bank locations. It’s just a matter of time before more behind-the-scene functions are enhanced or replaced with APIs, SaaS providers, and other integrations. It’s why Silicon Valley Bank bought API specialist Standard Treasury a few months ago.

The exciting thing about the API revolution in banking is that it doesn’t have to end in a rush to the bottom price-wise. Banks, unlike many ecommerce players, are in an enviable position of selling much-desired trust, security, risk management, convenience, service and financial connectivity. And with huge regulatory barriers to entry, they don’t have to worry about being Amazoned or Netflixed out of business, at least not for a generation or three.

Banks are more like a cable TV company, albeit without the service-dulling monopoly powers (an important distinction), bundling together a wide variety of programming/services for a fat monthly fee. I see no reason why the BankOS of the future won’t be able to collect monthly subscription fees of $20 to $25 per person in each household ($30/mo single; $50/mo couple; $75/mo family) for a highly secure, and 100% guaranteed, financial “pipe” that brings transactions, insurance, loans, investments and payments into the home.

With the entire industry going through a down-to-the-studs rebuild, it’s a great time to be a builder—whether developer, designer, IT architect, product manager—in the financial services/fintech industry.

Five Alums Earn Finalist Spots in Global Banking Innovation Awards 2015

Five Alums Earn Finalist Spots in Global Banking Innovation Awards 2015

BAI_homepage_July2015

Five Finovate alums, including three innovative bank partners, have made it to the finals of the BAI Global Banking Innovation Awards 2015.

Lending Club, Moven, and PayItSimple will compete for top honors in the “Most Innovative Non-Bank Financial Services Organization Award.”

Fidor Bank AG, headquartered in Germany, earned finalist honors in four categories. Fidor demoed its FidorPay Account at FinovateEurope 2011:

  • Product and service Innovation
  • Innovation in payments
  • Disruptive innovation in banking
  • Most innovative bank of the year

Poland’s Idea Bank made it to the finals in one category, Innovation in Payments. Idea Bank joined Efigence on the stage for FinvoateEurope 2014 and presented their transaction system for SMEs.

The winners and finalists will be recognized during the BAI Retail Delivery Conference & Expo, 13-15 October 2015 in Las Vegas.

A total of 39 finalists were selected out of more than 250 nominees. This year’s event featured three new categories: Innovation in Payments; Most Innovative Community-based Banking Organization; and Most Innovative Non-bank Organization. According to BAI president and CEO Debbie Blanucci, the goal was to recognize the full breadth of innovation in the financial services space.

“The new changes in this year’s program will enable us to further recognize innovation and originality throughout our industry,” Blanucci said, “including community financial institutions and new non-bank entrants that provide direct-to-consumer banking products and services.”

2015 marks the fifth year of the The BAI – Infosys Finacle Global Banking Innovation Awards, sponsored by Bank Administration Institute and BAI Center and Infosys.

DRAFT, Fidor US, Roostify to Present Solutions at Yodlee Ynext Incubator

DRAFT, Fidor US, Roostify to Present Solutions at Yodlee Ynext Incubator

Yodlee_Interactive_homepage_May2015

Out of the eight fintech startups slated to demonstrate their technologies at Yodlee’s Ynext Incubator Demo Day next week, three are Finovate alums.

DRAFT, Fidor US, and Roostify will join five other fintech colleagues at the Ynext Demo Day event on 27 May 2015 at the JCC in Palo Alto, California. As part of their participation in the program, each company gained free access to Yodlee Interactive’s API interfaces for a year, as well as six months’ worth of mentoring, support, and guidance in areas like capital-raising and product development.

DRAFT made its Finovate debut earlier this month at FinovateSpring 2015 in San Jose. The company’s mobile investment-analysis technology is targeted toward mass affluent millennials, and leverages crowdsourced data to help them make better financial and investment decisions.

Roostify demonstrated its technology at FinovateSpring 2014. The company’s solution helps lenders process loans faster while reducing risk and “demystifying” the home mortgage process for buyers.

Fidor US is a branch of the innovative, tech-savvy German bank, Fidor Bank, and represents the company’s strategy to bring its “branchless banking platform” to the United States. Fidor Bank demoed at FinovateEurope 2011 in London.

Yodlee is a long-time Finovate and FinDEVr alum, and multiple Best of Show award-winner. The company’s last appearance on stage was at FinovateSpring 2015.

Also participating in Demo Day are Accredify, Evolved Bookkeping, OCX, Telito, and VOATZ.
