ThetaRay Signs with ING Netherlands to Detect SME Lending Fraud

Big-data analytics company ThetaRay inked an agreement today with ING Netherlands that combines its Advanced Analytics solution for fraud detection with ING’s existing risk engine.

The partnership will empower ING to uncover new SME lending fraud by detecting anomalies through its transactional and organizational data. Beate Zwijnenberg, director of fraud and cybersecurity for ING Netherlands, says that ThetaRay impressed the company by “rapidly identifying a number of transactional anomalies.” She describes the company’s precision in detecting fraudulent activity as “truly innovative.”

ThetaRay’s algorithms help financial services organizations protect against cybersecurity threats, enhance operational efficiency, and detect risk. At FinovateFall 2015, Theta Ray’s fraud and credit risk algorithms were demoed. Udi Solomon, VP of product, began the demo saying, “We are able to take any type of structured or semi-structured data source to automatically and in just a few seconds… to detect the first signs of anomalous activity.” He continued by showing how the algorithms help banks leverage their big data.

ThetaRay, headquartered in Israel and the United States, has raised a total of $25 million from investors including Alibaba and General Electric. Mark Gazit is CEO. Last fall, the company was named Most Innovative Industrial Internet Technology at GE’s Minds + Machines 2015.

Finovate Alums Help Represent Fintech Innovation in Israel

Israel_FlagPYMNTS.com published an interesting, metric-based post on the tech scene in Israel. The post emphasized that while the country has a well deserved reputation as a “cybersecurity hotspot,” it is also true that “Israel’s tech ambitions and prowess extend much further.”

The salient statistic for me: 430—the number of fintech startups headquartered in Israel—is highly impressive, considering only 90 fintech startups existed in 2009.

With that in mind, here’s a look at some recent Israel-based Finovate alums who are helping make the country one of the world’s key locations for fintech innovation.

Our 14 Israel-based Finovate alums have raised more than $164 million in funding. Two alums—NICE Systems and Top Image Systems—are publicly traded on the Nasdaq, and two more—Capitali.se and TipRanks—have won Best of Show awards.

There’s no doubt the fintech in Israel is on the move. The country’s first fintech hub, The Floor, was launched in 2015, and as of March 2016 is now located at the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange. Writing about why fintech innovation is thriving in Israel, VentureBeat’s Avi Zeevi of Carmel Ventures highlighted a few key features:

  • Mastery of relevant technologies such as real-time analytics, cybersecurity, and risk management
  • Legacy of success creating a “startup ecosystem (with) massive amounts of knowledge”
  • The country has learned from other key global financial centers
  • Global financial institutions have a presence and have been investing in Israel
  • Israeli FIs “have always been open to innovation”

“All of this had led to a dramatic rise in investments in Israel fintech companies,” Zeevi wrote. “By addressing the needs of both developed and emerging markets, Israeli fintech will only continue to grow.”

Israeli anti-fraud and cybersecurity specialist ThetaRay has locked in a $5 million investment from Chinese e-commerce titan, Alibaba. The investment is part of a larger $20 million round-in-progress that includes participation from General Electric, Jerusalem Venture Partners, and Poalim Capital Markets, along with other investors.

ThetaRay’s technology specializes in detecting and preventing advanced persistent threat (APT), which is a type of network attack designed to steal information rather than simply destroy or damage a network or organization. The company’s solution also works against “zero-day” attacks—attacks via security vulnerabilities unknown to the vendor—within minutes of detection.

ThetaRay this week announced a new partnership with PwC, a global advisory firm specializing in audit and assurance, tax, and consulting services. The Global Joint Business Relationship will make ThetaRay technology a part of PwC’s advanced data-analytics service, and is PwC’s first with an Israeli cybersecurity firm.

“Using ThetaRay’s technology, we can help businesses utilize existing big data to discover opportunities, mitigate risks and increase revenues and profitability,” said Yaron Blachman, PwC Israel’s leader of technology and forensics consulting.

Founded in April 2013, with offices in Israel and the U.S., ThetaRay demonstrated its fraud and credit risk solution at FinovateFall 2015. The company was named “Most Innovative Industrial Internet Technology” at the Minds + Machines 2015 Conference sponsored by General Electric.
