Bank Innovation’s Coolest Brands of 2015 Features Finovate Alums

Bank Innovation’s Coolest Brands of 2015 Features Finovate Alums

BankInnovation_coolbrands2015

As if the challenge of developing innovative technologies were not enough, fintech companies today are also busy building brand identities that will help them stand out from the pack.

Bank Innovation took a look at brand identity in banking and banking technology. The result was a list of the 10 Coolest Brands of 2015 – half of which are Finovate alums.

The list runs the gamut from innovative startups doing interesting things with alternative currencies, to banks willing to take more and smarter risks than their rivals when it comes to leveraging financial technology to better serve their customers and clients.

Writing about the selection process, Bank Innovation’s Philip Ryan acknowledged the “ethereal” nature of the project: “like all brands, our list is based on nothing less than our ‘impressions,’ ‘feelings,’ and ‘beliefs.” At the same time, Ryan noted: “Mainly, we have relied on fact – what has been done and accomplished – for in the end the most profound determinant of a brand’s worth is what it yields.”

Here are the five Finovate alums that made Bank Innovations’ Coolest Brands of 2015. The full list is available here.

Also earning commendation were three other Finovate alums: Dwolla, Fastacash, and Fiserv.

2015 marked the fourth year in a row Bank Innovation has published its Coolest Brands in banking roundup (take a peek at their 2014 list here). Special congratulations to Venmo for making the list both this year and last.

It also turns out to be a great place to find Finovate alums. Of the 50 companies recognized by FinTechCity’s panels of judges as being “game-changers transforming the future of finance,” nearly half are alumni of Finovate conferences – including our upcoming event in London.
Here is the list of alums in alphabetical order:
According to Chris Skinner, who was one of the panelists, more than 700 companies competed for spots in the FinTech50. The selection panel included veterans of finance and technology from companies ranging from American Express and Google to Silicon Valley Bank and UBS. The FinTech50 winners were announced at an invitation-only event in London.
Speaking of London, Five Degrees, InvoiceSharing, Ixaris, mBank, and Trunomi will be in town next month, demonstrating their latest solutions at FinovateEurope 2015, February 10 and 11. More information on the event available here.

Fidor AG is First Bank to Deploy Ripple Protocol

Thumbnail image for ripplelogo1.jpg

We don’t know who reported the news first, but Finovate was glad to be among the few who figured out late last week that Fidor Bank AG was using Ripple to move money in three different countries.

And once we were able to track down the source of this exciting development in the world of alternative payments, we couldn’t wait to share it.

Today we get further confirmation as Ripple announces that Germany’s Fidor Bank is indeed the first bank to adopt the Ripple protocol. Ripple Labs CEO Chris Larsen celebrated the occasion by emphasizing the benefits of his technology, chiefly its ability to provide “real-time settlement in any currency … at highly competitive rates” anywhere in the world.

Thumbnail image for fidorLogo.jpg

Fidor will use Ripple in a number of ways, including inter- and intrabank payments between other financial institutions and its own branches. The Ripple integration will also allow the bank to offer its customers faster and less expensive money transfer options.
It will be interesting to see how much Fidor’s deployment of Ripple influences other financial institutions to pursue similar alternatives. In nothing Fidor’s adoption of Ripple in a panel discussion at the Finextra Future Money conference last week, the Anthemis Group’s Udayan Goyal did so in the context of saying that “Swift will be gone in 3 years.” He tweeted later:

SWIFT, the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, is the leading provider of international interbank messaging.
Developed by Ripple Labs, Ripple is an open-source, distributed payment protocol. The system allows anyone to transmit value anywhere in the world, securely and in real-time. Virtually free transactions and the lack of chargebacks make the technology attractive to merchants. And consumers can take advantage of the flexibility of Ripple to support everything from real and virtual currencies to non-currency value such as frequent flier miles and mobile minutes.
Ripple Labs won Silver in the “Best New Technology” category at the PYMNTS.com Innovation Awards this year, and has raised $9 million in funding. A Finovate alum, the company demoed its Ripple protocol at FinovateSpring 2013 in San Francisco.
