First to Faster: TransferWise Joins U.K. Payment Scheme

First to Faster: TransferWise Joins U.K. Payment Scheme

In gaining direct access to the U.K.’s Faster Payment scheme, Transferwise is the first non-bank to take advantage of a settlement directive from the Bank of England. The new policy, designed to add both competition and innovation to the country’s payment system, will give non-bank payment service providers (PSPs) direct access to the payment systems that settle in central bank money.

Accessible systems will include Faster Payments, Bacs, Chaps, Link, and Visa. The BoE’s new digital cheque imaging system, once activated, will also be available to non-bank PSPs. In addition to reducing processing costs, the move by TransferWise will enable it to leverage its new borderless accounts further by offering instant transfers to GBP. TransferWise customers paying with debit and credit cards will also benefit from TransferWise’s direct connection to RTGS (Real-Time Gross Settlement) and the Faster Payments scheme.

“Today is game changing for TransferWise and millions of our customers around the world. The Bank of England is giving tech companies the same rights to process payments as the retail banks – enabling us to cut out the middlemen and offer people a faster, cheaper service,” TransferWise CEO and co-founder Kristo Käärmann said. “I truly believe that money should move around the world as quickly and as cheaply as email, and this is a vital step on that journey.”

The company said the initiative will help provide a level playing field with banks and encouraged central banks around the world to pursue similar policies. Previous to gaining a settlement account in RTGS, TransferWise was relegated to using the traditional banking rails to access the fastest available system. Käärman told Reuters that his company has been seeking this kind of access for five years.

Ranked by The Financial Times on its FT 1,000 list of Europe’s fastest growing companies earlier this month, TransferWise demonstrated its technology at FinovateEurope 2013. Earlier this year, the company partnered with Wirecard to launch a debit card to accompany its new digital borderless account offering, and teamed up with Seedrs to power payroll for the crowdfunding platform.

TransferWise has raised more than $396 million in funding, and includes Index Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, Seedcamp, Institutional Venture Partners (IVP), IA Ventures, Valar Ventures, Bailie Gifford, and Old Mutual Global Investors among its equity holders. The company facilitates the transfer of more than $2 billion worldwide every month and claims savings of $80 million a month for consumers compared to transfers made using traditional banks.

TransferWise to Power Payroll for Crowdfunding Platform Seedrs

TransferWise to Power Payroll for Crowdfunding Platform Seedrs

One of the challenges of having a global workforce is ensuring that all workers are paid promptly in their local currencies. We learned last week that crowdfunding platform Seedrs has found a solution to this problem in the form of a new partnership with international money transfer innovator and FinovateEurope alum, TransferWise.

TransferWise will process payments for Seedrs at the real exchange rate directly from Reuters using its batch payments tool. This option enables businesses to settle international and domestic payroll with one click, sending up to 1,000 payments at a time directly to payees’ accounts. Businesses benefit from TransferWise’s competitive exchange rates and workers appreciate payments that arrive within 1 to 2 days.

The speed of TransferWise’s international payments was among the reasons why one current client, Travelopo, uses the company’s batch payment tool. Speaking for the company, which formerly transferred millions via a well-known international bank, Travelopo founder and CEO Roger Fenton explained that faster payments and even a small savings in the exchange rate can make a significant difference over time.  “As an international business, we settle invoices in sterling and euro – so the cost can hit us or our supplies,” Fenton said. “With TransferWise, everyone is better off.”

The new partnership with Seedrs comes in the wake of news that TransferWise has opened up its borderless account beyond business users. Launched for business customers in the spring of 2017, TransferWise announced that it would roll out the multi-currency accounts to consumers in the first quarter of this year. As for Seedrs, the crowdfunding firm enters 2018 having recorded what the company called “our most successful year to date” in 2017, earning accolades from the British Small Business Awards as Alternative Finance Platform of the Year, and providing funding to companies like Finovate alum Revolut.

Founded in 2010, London-based TransferWise demonstrated its technology at FinovateEurope 2013. The company raised $280 million in funding back in November in a Series E round led by Old Mutual Global Investors and VC firm IVP. The investment boosted the TransferWise’s total capital to more than $396 million and gave the firm an estimated valuation of $1.6 billion.

TransferWise Brings New Multi-Currency Borderless Accounts with Debit Cards to Public

TransferWise Brings New Multi-Currency Borderless Accounts with Debit Cards to Public

TransferWise announced that the new multi-currency account it initially introduced to businesses last year will be rolled out to consumers in the first quarter of 2018. The borderless accounts enable users to hold and convert up to 28 currencies at the real exchange rate; get bank details instantly from the U.K., E.U., Australia, and the U.S.; and to receive money transferred from abroad in GBP, EUR, AUD, and USD for free.

They are also free to open and do not require an overseas address. New users get a British account number and sort code, a European IBAN, an Australian account number and BSB code, and an American account number and routing number. There is a small fee for converting across currencies and for cash withdrawals, but there are no charges for monthly setup or receiving fees.

“Multi-currency accounts have been available from banks at extortionate prices for years, but for the first time we’re bringing true, multi-country banking – with real bank details in key currencies – to any one who needs it,” said TransferWise co-founder and chairman Taavet Hinrikus.

TransferWise made borderless accounts available to business customers as of May of last year, but did not come with the debit card the 2018 offering will have. The company told TechCrunch that the accounts are best thought of as a “companion account that solves a couple of different but fundamental problems.” Business Insider suggested that the account and debit card combo from TransferWise will help the company serve what it called the “competitive travel money market” as well as a counter to the challenge of fintechs like Revolut and its low-fee foreign exchange card.

The news from TransferWise comes just a few months after the company’s successful $280 million Series E round led by Old Mutual Global Investors. This added to the company’s valuation, last reported at $1.1 billion in 2017. Founded in 2010 and headquartered in London, U.K., TransferWise demonstrated its platform at FinovateEurope 2013. The company was named to the European Fintech 100 in September, along with several of its fellow Finovate alums, and earned a spot on CB Insights Fintech 250 list. In July, TransferWise announced that co-founder Kristo Kaarmann would take over as CEO from Taavet Hinrikus, who transitioned to the role of chairman.
