Equifax announced today that it has agreed to acquire ID protection innovator and Finovate alum, TrustedID.

The specific amount of the deal was not disclosed by Equifax. However reports indicate that the all-cash arrangement totaled more than $30 million.

TrustedID will become a part of Equifax’s Personal Solutions, which focuses on credit monitoring and identity protection. The company has raised $20 million in investment capital since it was founded in 2004. TrustedID is headquartered in Palo Alto, California, from which the company’s employees will continue to work, post-acquisition.

TrustedID was recently in the news for its new service designed to help protect seniors from identity theft. Announced last month, the program is run through AARP and is geared toward the over-50 population that is most vulnerable to ID theft. TrustedID’s product suite includes solutions ranging from ID and credit protection to data breach defense systems.
TrustedID demoed its technology as part of the FinovateSpring 2011 show in San Francisco. See the company’s presentation here.

Notes:

1. We reviewed 255 unique sites. Data was unavailable or irrelevant for 201 sites because:

  • They had been acquired.
  • They were no longer available online.
  • They were not covered by Compete for various reasons (including some that were not U.S. domestic companies).
  • The number of unique visits was too small to be considered accurate.
  • They were subdomains of larger websites.

2. Numbers have been rounded to three significant digits.

3. The charts include companies that did not have measurable traffic in May 2011, indicated by “N/A.”

4. Compete draws its information from the online activity of a panel of more than 2 million U.S. Internet users. It is only an estimate of traffic, and may undercount at-work usage.

The Wall Street Journal Profiles Identity Theft Protection Services

Today's Wall Street Journal ran a run-down of identity theft startups. Companies mentioned:

  • Lifelock_guaranteeLifeLock: Founded by Todd Davis, the Chandler, AZ-based firm has been offering its $10/mo service since April 2005. The company also protects children living in the same household for an additional $10 per year. Its plain-language guarantee featured prominently in the upper-right corner of its home page should serve as an example for financial institutions (see inset).
  • TrustedID: A Redwood City, CA-based company co-founded in January by former Fair Isaac executive Scott Mitic offers protection services for $7.95/mo.
  • CardCops: The Malibu, CA-based firm scans the Internet for stolen information and for $24.95/mo alerts its customers if their data has been compromised.
  • Cyveillance: The Arlington, VA firm also sifts through the online world looking for stolen data. The company resells its service as Identity Guard through Intersections Inc.

Financial institutions should be partnering with credit bureaus and/or identity theft providers to provide education and protection services to banking customers. Refer to previous articles here.
