BBVA Ventures Investment to Help SumUp’s South American Expansion

Thumbnail image for sumup_logo.jpg

SumUp is coming to America – one hemisphere at a time.

The European mobile payments company is expected to reach South American shores by the end of the year, according to a report in TechCrunch published today.

News of the expansion comes as SumUp announced receiving funding from BBVA Ventures, the venture capital wing of Spanish bank, BBVA. The amount of BBVA’s investment was undisclosed, but it is believed to be part of the larger investment of more than $20 million announced by SumUp in May. That round included participation by investors ranging from American Express to Groupon to Tengelmann Ventures.

Funding from BBVA will contribute toward SumUp’s growth into South America, as well as help extend the brand in European countries like Spain and Portugal, where BBVA is strong. SumUp also recently announced expansion into Russia.
Both BBVA and SumUp are alumni of FinovateEurope 2013, held earlier this year in London. BBVA demoed Stockbuzz.es, technology that analyzes Twitter data for clues to market sentiment. SumUp presented its mobile payments solution, which makes it easier for small businesses to accept card payments.

Three Finovate Alumni Make Top Ten Mobile Banking App List

SimpleLogo.jpgLooking for the best in fintech innovation? According to American Banker, there’s a Finovate alum (or three) for that.

Simple, Pageonce, and BBVA Compass were featured in a slide show highlighting the “top ten most progressive mobile banking apps.”

Thumbnail image for Pageonce Logo.jpg

How did these three make American Banker‘s short list? According to the reviewers, “account application features, design, and ease of use” were among the main factors that helped distinguish the top ten (including these three Finovate alumni) from the rest of the mobile banking app field.
Watch Simple’s most recent Finovate demo here. And Pageonce’s presentation at FinovateSpring 2010 is here

BBVA’s New Tool Uses Twitter Sentiment to Analyze Stock Market Behavior

This post is a part of our live coverage of FinovateEurope 2013.

BBVAHiLogo.jpg

The final demo for the first session today is BBVA, who showed how its tool can assess whether views of the stock market expressed in Twitter correlate with actual market behavior:

“To find out if the “market sentiment” expressed in Twitter is correlated with actual market behavior, we at BBVA have launched Stockbuzz (www.stockbuzz.es). This is a site where the user can view the sentiment that Twitter users feel on the Ibex 35 and the securities that make up the index, and compare it with their actual share price on the stock exchange.

The website is user friendly, easily understandable and attractive. It shows graphs and data based on the information that is posted on Twitter, but also promotes interaction with this social network, as it contains a section where site visitors can leave their own messages on the analyzed stocks.”

Product Launch: December 2012
HQ: Madrid, Spain
Founded: January 1857
Metrics: 117,500 employees, over 30 countries, more than 47M customers, 900,000 shareholders
