The 85 Fintech Graduates of Y Combinator (YC): 2005 to 2016

The 85 Fintech Graduates of Y Combinator (YC): 2005 to 2016

yc slogan

Update: See here for full-year 2016.

Y Combinator (YC) continues to be the most important incubator in the general technology space with high-flying alums such as Airbnb, Dropbox and Instacart. YC is less well known, but equally successful in the fintech vertical with Stripe and Zenefits, along with two Finovate alums, ZenPayroll and Coinbase, all in the $500+ million club (based on most recent funding).

Those big wins are all the more impressive, given the smaller universe of fintech companies incubated at YC—less than 10% of its total (see table below). YC has hatched just 85 fintech companies (see list below), most in the past 30 months.

Going forward, it will be interesting to see how well the new crop of specialized fintech incubators does in attracting promising new fintech companies. Does backing from Barclays or Wells Fargo trump the halo effect of a YC investment? We’ll soon find out.

Friday Fun: Bank of America’s New Llama Videos #LLOVEYOURAPP

Friday Fun: Bank of America’s New Llama Videos #LLOVEYOURAPP

Bank of America on Wednesday dropped a set of 12 clever video segments called #LLOVEYOURAPP. You can see them all on the BofA YouTube channel. Most have 100 to 200 views, so they are virtually unknown so far. I’m guessing that is about to change as they are pretty clever. For one, a cud-chewing llama is demoing features of the BofA mobile app; for two, they remind me a bit of E*Trade’s baby series that for many years ran in the Super Bowl and elsewhere.

I don’t know what the plan is for them, whether they are to remain a social media play or will eventually run on TV (each one is either 15 or 30 seconds, so made for TV). I first spied them this afternoon via a Google+ promo next to a BofA email newsletter I received yesterday (see screenshot below). And the bank tweeted it once today and replied to a few more with the #LLOVEYOURAPP hashtag.

Fintech Fundings Q1 2016: 334 Deals Totalling $6.7 Billion

Fintech Fundings Q1 2016: 334 Deals Totalling $6.7 Billion

Money_quarterThe fintech funding slowdown is officially a myth. In first quarter, both the money raised and the number of deals increased sequentially and year-over-year. In fact, Q1 was the biggest quarter in both number (334) and value ($6.7 billion) since we began tracking in mid-2014. And it was probably the biggest ever, since things really started heating up in 2014.*

The 334 fundings were double the volume of Q1 2015. It was 31% higher than Q4 2015 and 21% higher than Q3, the busiest quarter last year. Deal value was also up 110% over Q1 2015, 56% over Q4 2015, and 3% higher than Q3 2015.

Below is the breakdown for the past seven quarters as tracked by The Finovate Group (see Notes & Caveats below for our methodology). For a full list of fundings by week, go here.

The bigger question is what happens for the rest of 2016 and beyond? Given the funds flowing into VCs, the overall tech budgets of big financial institutions, and the rewiring of financial services via APIs, SDKs and alt-this and -that, there could be many more shiney quarters ahead.

Global Fintech Fundings by Quarter

2016    Value      Number
Q1      $6.7 bil        334

2015
Q4      $4.3 bil*     255
Q3      $6.5 bil       275
Q2      $4.7 bil       195
Q1      $3.2 bil        171
Total $18.7 bil     896

Avg/Q $4.7 bil     224

2014
Q4     $4.1 bil       210
Q3     $2.1 bil       191

* The value shown for Q4 2015, excludes the $6.1 billion raised in IPOs of Square, Worldpay and First Data

Notes & Caveats:

  1. There is no exact definition of what makes up a fintech company. We look for technology-oriented companies in the financial services arena, either providing services directly to consumers or selling technology to financial services companies. Our definition of financial services includes banking, investing, lending, trading, wealth management, insurance, cloud-based accounting for small business (SMB) and real estate. We also include any company that has appeared at Finovate or FinDEVr, because those companies are clearly targeting the financial services vertical.
  2. We are primarily tracking VC Equity and Debt flowing to private companies, although we also track equity raised in IPOs and follow-on rounds of public companies.
  3. We admit that our definition may not be exactly constant over time. It could be that at least some of the growth over time is that we have loosened our definition. It’s not intentional, but, hey, we love fintech and are always looking for companies to add to the list.
  4. This list is not complete. We primarily use the databases at Crunchbase, Finovate, FT Partners, and WhoGotFunded to find fintech fundings. If the funding went unreported in those databases, we are unlikely to have it.

CFPB Sets Sights on Data-Security Practices

CFPB Sets Sights on Data-Security Practices

_____________________________

Guest post by Erica A.N. Kramer and Justin B. Hosie*
________________________________

caution_signIt’s hard to imagine that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), which is not tasked with enforcing information-safeguarding (Congress left that with the FTC), would impose civil fines on a company for safeguarding representations, when the company in question didn’t have a data breach.

It’s even harder to imagine such an action when the very same agency announced a policy to encourage consumer-friendly financial innovations just a few weeks before imposing the fines. However, we now live in an age when the CFPB seeks to encourage financial innovation one day and stifle it in the next, even when no consumer harm appears to exist.

What happened
Earlier this month, the CFPB announced a consent order in its “first data-security action.” The announcement sends a clear message that the CFPB now has its sights on data-security practices. This enforcement action clearly shows that the CFPB is once again stretching its authority by simply labeling a representation as deceptive and blurring the lines between federal agencies’ jurisdictions. Consequently, we’re likely to see a significant increase of regulatory scrutiny in the data-security arena in the upcoming months.

DwollaLogo2015The action targeted Dwolla, a Finovate alum operating a digital payment network that allows members to send and receive money. It has more than 650,000 members and transfers as much as $5 million per day. The CFPB alleged that Dwolla misrepresented its data-security practices by describing its network as “safe” and “secure” and its data-security practices as exceeding industry standards. While there appears to have been no consumer harm whatsoever, according to the CFPB’s unilateral assertions, Dwolla’s data-security practices did not live up to its claims and the representations constituted deceptive acts and practices. As a result, the CFPB imposed restrictions on Dwolla’s future conduct and ordered Dwolla to pay $100,000 into the CFPB Civil Penalty Fund.

Implications
Imposing civil penalties on innovative companies like Dwolla seems particularly heavy-handed when you consider the lack of evidence of consumer harm. Despite the extremely high volume of money and personal information moving through its network, Dwolla never experienced a data breach or received a consumer complaint regarding its data-security policies.

As Dwolla explained in its blog on March 2, “Dwolla was incorporating new ideas because we wanted to build a safer product, but at the time we may not have chosen the best language and comparisons to describe some of our capabilities.” Dwolla also explained that it is continually learning, growing, and adjusting its data-security practices to ensure members are provided with the security they expect. Unfortunately, the CFPB’s order demonstrates little tolerance for the growing pains and adjustments often accompanied by developing new technologies.

Recommendations
Given the CFPB’s none-too-subtle foreshadowing that more data-security-enforcement actions are on the horizon, we urge Fintech companies to consider several important factors:

  • Understate, don’t exaggerate: The CFPB has little tolerance for puffery when it comes to data security. Make sure your claims match your practices.
  • Act, don’t react: Address potential data-security vulnerabilities as soon as they come to your attention. Don’t wait for a problem to arise.
  • Evolve your practices and your claims: Make sure that your data-security practices are growing and changing in lockstep with your product’s development.
  • Follow the rules: Make compliance your top priority. Institute and follow a robust compliance management system that includes regular oversight and input by your company’s management and board.

Since there’s no way to avoid regulatory scrutiny, make sure your data-security practices are above reproach before the CFPB set its sights on your company.

Chatbot Banking

Chatbot Banking

2 5 billion peopleTry wrapping your brain around this little nugget. There are now 2.5 billion unique users of messaging apps worldwide. And they are fast becoming news, search and ecommerce platforms on their own.

How does chat morph into ecommerce, let alone banking? In China and other Asian countries, embedded chatbots are all the rage on messaging platforms such as Wechat, WhatsApp, Kik, Telegram and Slack.

Telegram is the only messaging platform to open up its chat API, such that there are now 120,000 bots serving its 5 million users (for example, see @gif and @vid at work here).

Tencent’s WeChat, the most popular messaging app in China … lets users shop, pay bills and book appointments.
Wall Street Journal, 22 Dec 2015

chatbank_mockupJust yesterday, YC-incubated Chatfuel demoed its platform at W16 Demo Day. And it’s coming soon to Facebook’s Messenger (of course).

Chatbot is hard to define. Google tells us:

chat·bot /ˈCHatbät/
noun
a computer program designed to simulate conversation with human users, especially over the Internet.
“Chatbots often treat conversations like they’re a game of tennis: talk, reply, talk, reply.”

Unlike sales/service “live chat” that’s become commonplace within online banking, chatbot banking is 100% automated and includes a back and forth “chat” designed to hone in on the precise question or request. They are a boon to mobile self-service, where the limitations of screen size make traditional searching less user-friendly.

But chatbots can also handle transactions, especially the repetitive routine ones typical of online/mobile banking sessions. See the inset for how I imagine text banking might work for one of the most common tasks: balance inquiry with a subsequent funds-transfer.

Looking ahead
If you think of online banking via a PC as digital banking 1.0, and mobile as digital banking 2.0, then the upcoming invisible UI (or the “no UI, UI” coined by USAA’s Neff Hudson) using chatbots, AI and machine learning could very well be version 3.0. At least, that’s my hope. It reminds me of my all-time favorite quote about banking (circa late 1990’s), from noted technologist Esther Dyson:

Banking is like vacuuming; it’s vital, but everybody tries to reduce their vacuuming time.

Embrace the vacuum. People pay good money for them (no relation to Esther, I think).

Fintech Fundings: 36 Companies Raise $480 Million Week Ending March 18

ideas_moneyAt Finovate, we are all about the next new thing. That’s why we love compiling the weekly funding report. Money (usually) flows to the best ideas (or at least the best execution). And if that holds true, 2016 is going to be a banner year as total deals are running double the pace of 2015—285 vs. 139 last year.

Last week, a record 36 companies raised $207 million in equity and $273 million in debt for a total of $480 million. The $6.0 billion total raised YTD is double the $3 billion at this point last year.

Telling Personal Stories via Bank Transaction History

Telling Personal Stories via Bank Transaction History

paper receipt pile

One of the initial aims of personal financial management (PFM) was making sense out of your spending. For a variety of reasons, most consumers view that as just too much work for too little in return. But, since the launch of Mint nine years ago, much progress has been made on that value equation. Thanks to mobile technologies and various APIs, tracking is easier as well as more data rich, resulting in output that is much more useful.

For example, Simple’s Safe to Spend predicts when you will run out of cash with virtually no user input. It’s a great benefit for numbers-oriented customers who already pay close attention to their balances. But what about the other 90% of the world? Can PFM services deliver value for those that will never appreciate an animated graphic of their 10-year moving average of Starbucks purchases?

I believe the answer is yes.

PFM services need to broaden their role and help customers track their “financial stories.” Think about it. Unless you are an obsessive Facebook/Instagram/Foursquare poster, where else can you look back and find out where you ate last year in San Diego, what souvenirs you brought back for the kids, and which car rental company you want to avoid next time?

All that info, and much more, is locked away in your credit/debit card transaction history. Just being able to search your transactions helps tremendously (thanks, Mint). But what if you had ready access to all the information on your receipt? Then you could see not only where you ate, but also which entree you loved (since you would have made a note on the receipt at the time).

Currently, integration with camera phones, such as that offered by Expensify, do this for highly motivated users, such as those with a large financial incentive to track their reimbursable expenses. But what about everyone else?

That’s where startups—such as Finovate alums Ready Receipts, Shoeboxed, Xpenditure, as well as dozens of PFM providers and mobile payment specialists—come into play. They are devoted to getting the transaction detail on receipts aggregated into a single, easily accessible source.

piper_home

We recently met another startup that seems to have good traction solving this problem (and happens to count Expensify as an investor), Washington D.C.-based Piper. Most of our conversation was off the record, but I love what they are doing, working with the POS players to reach critical mass in a difficult two-sided market—one in which retailers don’t want to spend money on enhanced receipts unless there are users, and users won’t bother unless they see a sizable number of receipts available.

Piper has also narrowed in on a business model that charges fees to the portion of the ecosystem that stands to gain the most from better receipt management; namely, the merchants, card issuers, and transaction acquirers who benefit massively from the 30% reduction in chargebacks that the system has proven in early tests.

I look forward to the time when Piper and the others have changed the PFM story.

Fintech Fundings: 29 Companies Raise $76 Million Week Ending March 3

money_keyWhile we continued the streak of 20 or more weekly deals (now = 9), we had a sub-$100 million week for the first time this year. The $76 million raised was the lowest total in a non-holiday week since the first week of March a year ago (who knew the 9th week was so slow?).

However, there were 11 deals with undisclosed funding amounts, notably a “double digit millions” D-round for AuxMoney, which had also raised nearly $200 million in previous rounds. So, the weekly total may well have surpassed $100 million.

Nine weeks into 2016, the total raised is $5.4 billion, more than double the $2.4 billion invested during the same period last year. And more telling, the number of deals is up 90% (227 vs. 119 in 2015).
