Finovate alum Cachet Financial Solutions (FinovateFall 2012) has announced its acquisition of Moneto, the prepaid mobile platform, from another Finovate alum, DeviceFidelity.

Calling prepaid "one of the fastest growing financial product sectors," Cachet CEO and President Jeffrey Mack said, "This acquisition is a perfect complement to Cachet's current RDC mobile prepaid offering and demonstrates our strategic evolution to a more comprehensive mobile offering.

While Moneto is the main prize in the acquisition, there is more to the package than the prepaid mobile platform alone. Cachet Financial will also gain a core VISA prepaid mobile money platform, and strategic relationships with partners like Navy Federal Credit Union, MasterCard, and Moneygram.

The Moneto platform provides clients with a variety of features including:
  • card loading
  • card balance and history
  • loyalty and rewards
  • person-to-person (P2P) transfers
  • expedited bill pay and remittance
  • instant "Good Funds" to load card by check
DeviceFidelityLogo.jpg
Moneto also enables contactless payments for both iOS and Android smartphones. The mobile app allows the user to access his or her prepaid card from their mobile device, as well.

Cachet Financial is known for its remote deposit capture (RDC) technology, which leverages technology from Mitek (yet another Finovate alum) to provide solutions for financial institutions, credit unions and consumers alike. The company is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and was founded in 2010.

Since adopting PicturePay, bank and credit union customers of Allied Payment Network have seen 5-15% month-over-month growth in transactions and 10% growth in retention rates for customers who used bill pay. This has taken retention rates as high as 98%.

This is the emerging bill pay landscape as seen from the partnership between Allied Payment Network and Mitek. With more financial institutions offering ways for customers to pay bills, a feature like mobile bill pay helps distinguish those FIs looking to maximize opportunities through the fastest growing transaction channel.

Allied Payment Network notes that half of the customers who use PicturePay never took advantage of online bill pay services in the past. And a big selling point for the technology is the ability to pay using the mobile device's camera rather than having to type out information on a keyboard.

picturepay_homepage.jpg
The company was recently in the news with announcement of its partnership with ACI Worldwide to provide same day bill pay via PicturePay. Among the technology's recent adopters is Ameriana Bank and, this year, Allied Payment Network announced its first credit union to deploy PicturePay.

Allied Payment Network teamed up with Mitek to present its PicturePay solution as part of the FinovateSpring 2013 event in San Francisco. See the company in action here.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined the audience and participated in our largest New York show so far. And, of course, thanks to the 69 innovative companies who took on the FinovateFall stage in front of a crowd of 1,100+ audience members.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Notes on methodology:
1. Only audience members NOT associated with demoing companies were eligible to vote. Finovate employees did not vote.
2. Attendees were encouraged to note their favorites during each day. At the end of the last demo, they chose their three favorites.
3. The exact written instructions given to attendees: "Please rate (the companies) on the basis of demo quality and potential impact of the innovation demoed."
4. The eight companies appearing on the highest percentage of submitted ballots were named Best of Show.
5. Go here for a list of previous Best of Show winners.

With its decision to deploy PicturePay, 3Rivers Federal Credit Union becomes the first credit union in the U.S. to adopt Allied Payment Network's mobile bill pay solution.

PicturePay's approach to mobile bill pay leverages the smartphone. Users take a picture of the bill and the imaging software - powered by the technology from another Finovate alum, Mitek - reads the data. All the user needs to do is enter the amount to be paid and the date to confirm payment.

3rivers.jpg
3Rivers Federal Credit Union has more than $750 million in assets, and more than 67,000 members in northern Indiana and northern Ohio. 3Rivers was founded in 1935, and is headquartered in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

In partnership with Malauzai Software, Allied Payment Network recently announced the availability of PicturePay as a standalone solution. The company has been active in fundraising this year, as well, picking up a total of more than $750,000 so far in 2013.

Allied Payment Network demoed its PicturePay technology as part of FinovateSpring 2013 in San Francisco. See the company's presentation here.

Are you a financial institution? Do you love PicturePay, but fear parting with your current mobile banking provider?

No problem. Thanks to a new initiative by Allied Payment Network and Malauzai Software, the photo-based payment solution now will be available to banks and credit unions as a stand-alone mobile billpay alternative.

PicturePay enables mobile payments by allowing users to photograph their bill, confirm the amount to be paid, and then submit the payment directly. The software, powered by fellow Finovate alum Mitek, uses optical character recognition (OCR) technology as well as analytics to read and verify the data.

Founded in 2010, Allied Payment Network is headquartered in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and launched its PicturePay solution in January 2013. The company demoed its technology as part of the FinovateSpring 2013 show in San Francisco, winning special praise from both Bank Innovation and Credit Union Times.

AlliedPaymentLogo.jpgThe agreement between Allied Payment Network and City Bank Texas will put the company's mobile bill payment service at the disposal of the bank's customers throughout the Lone Star State.

How does PicturePay work? The app takes advantage of the fact that the average smartphone in 2013 has a high-enough quality resolution to accurately photography the average credit card or utility bill.

Add in the amount to be paid, the date, and the app does the rest. PicturePay pulls the relevant data from the image of the bill, makes sure the biller is the correct one, and then issues the payment through its own network.

CityBankTexasPicPay.jpg

A few facts about City Bank of Texas:

  • The bank has $2 billion in assets
  • The bank is headquartered in Lubbock, and has 22 branches throughout the state.
  • Founded in 1941, the bank has more than 500 employees

Interestingly, the technology behind PicturePay, specifically the optical character recognition (OCR) engine, was developed by another Finovate alum, Mitek. Read more about Mitek's technology here.
