The agreement between Allied Payment Network and City Bank Texas will put the company's mobile bill payment service at the disposal of the bank's customers throughout the Lone Star State. How does PicturePay work? The app takes advantage of the fact that the average smartphone in 2013 has a high-enough quality resolution to accurately photography the average credit card or utility bill. Add in the amount to be paid, the date, and the app does the rest. PicturePay pulls the relevant data from the image of the bill, makes sure the biller is the correct one, and then issues the payment through its own network.
A few facts about City Bank of Texas: - The bank has $2 billion in assets
- The bank is headquartered in Lubbock, and has 22 branches throughout the state.
- Founded in 1941, the bank has more than 500 employees
Interestingly, the technology behind PicturePay, specifically the optical character recognition (OCR) engine, was developed by another Finovate alum, Mitek. Read more about Mitek's technology here. Allied Payment Network is one of the companies that will be presenting its technology at FinovateSpring in San Francisco in May. In the last demo before lunch, Mitek Systems discussed how its mobile imaging technology can be used to create alternative financial services for the growing population of underbanked Americans.
It demonstrated a mobile alternative to check-cashing stores that uses its mobile deposit technology, the same technology that powers mobile deposit solutions for the top 8 retail banks and more than 250 other financial institutions.
This new capability will enable the underbanked population to take photos of the front and back of checks and load the funds directly onto a prepaid card. This innovative approach can free unbanked individuals from the confines and sometimes predatory practices of check-cashing facilities.

Mobile imaging company Mitek announced Monday that E*Trade will join Charles Schwab in providing remote check deposit technology to brokerage customers. It will be available on the iPhone next month and on the Android in early 2012. Mitek notes the benefit for E*Trade clients: "The move by E*Trade, a New York-based online brokerage, is especially notable because customers currently have to mail a check or use direct deposit or transfer or wire money from an alternative account."
E*Trade is hoping the added convenience will keep clients more engaged with its trading platform. To learn more about Mitek, watch its FinovateFall 2011 demo.
