Pageonce Rebrands as Check

Check_logo.jpg

The company formerly known as Pageonce has changed its name to Check. See for yourself at their new online home, check.me.

Why Check? According to COO Steve Schultz, the name change long had been a work in progress for the company, and includes at least three elements they believe will help consumers and potential partners better understand the brand and the business.

On its face "Check" reminds consumers that the service still represents an alternative to paper checks, arguably part of the original mission of Pageonce. Beyond this, the company appreciates how the name "Check" also reflects the idea of "checking off" tasks that have been accomplished, as well as the importance of keeping one's finances simple and "in check."

Check_art1.jpg

The evolution of Pageonce to Check is a testament to the evolution of a company that began with an innovative data aggregation tool. Said Schultz in a phone conversation last week, "The company is very different now and has grown to be one of the few companies to provide a digital wallet that includes personal finance management, bill pay, and mobile."

All of this is geared toward helping the company take better advantage of the $4 trillion bill payment market. "We will continue to focus on innovation in payments," he added, noting that their peer-to-peer payment feature, PayAnyone, continues to grow since its launch three months ago. The company is especially pleased at the high collection rates (i.e., the rate at which people pick up the money sent to them). Said Schultz, "it is one thing to send people money. People have to actually go and get it."

Check_art2.jpg

"Fortunately, because our average ticket is $400-500, most people have enough incentive to collect the money."

What else is coming from Check in 2013? Expedited bill pay is one of the features many customers have been longing for. Here, Schultz says that the feature is a "natural fit for us" and is something consumers can expect from Check later this year.

Check_art3.jpg

Check is also working more directly with billers. Although formal announcements are still at least a month away, Check will be serving as the mobile payment channel for a number of billers in the near future.

"We found that some billers have no mobile channel, or have tried to build their own," said Schultz. "Others have tried to develop a specific payment app."

"What we found is that customers want a simple solution. This will allow bill payment without the traditional PFM linking. Give Check your account number and they'll be able to do the rest."

Thumbnail image for PageonceLogo.jpgPageonce's drive to create a mobile checkbook on your smartphone just reached a new gear.

The new service, Pay Anyone, gives smartphone users the ability to make the sort of frequent, informal payments typically reserved for checks. Rather than write a check to the landlord or the babysitter or the repairman, users will simply be able to make the payment as part of a person-to-person transaction using their Android or iOS device.

PayAnyone.jpg
The new app is designed to deepen Pageonce's presence in the local payments market, where checks written to small businesses and individuals represent trillions in purchase value. Here's a closer look at what's on the table:
  • Consumers write 11 billion checks a year to small businesses and individuals
  • Pageonce currently processes more than $1 million in bill payments daily
  • More than 50% of consumers do not use or rarely carry a checkbook, according to 2013 study
  • Pageonce has $23 million in funding; 6,000 billers; more than 7.5 million users
Pageonce demoed its Personal Assistant and Bill Assistant at FinovateSpring 2010. A look at Pay Anyone is available here.
Thumbnail image for PageonceLogo.jpgYou may or may not want to send money to friends and family. But sooner or later, we've all got bills to pay.

And betting on the latter is paying off for mobile payment company, Pageonce.

Here are the key items from the company's recent announcement as reported in TechCrunch:

  • Processing $1 million in mobile bill payments every day
  • Expecting an annual payment volume run-rate of $1 billion by the middle of 2013
  • Reached a 30% month-over-month growth in payment volume

Pageonce has more than 7.5 million users and 6,000 billers. The company's mobile bill payment operation began a year ago. An upgrade last November added new features such as File Cabinet and Scheduled Payments.

With more than 50 employees, Pageonce has raised more than $20 million in venture funding capital. They demoed at FinovateSpring 2010.

Pageonce Logo.jpgEarlier today, Pageonce launched a mobile bill pay service that provides consumers more flexibility when paying bills:

"Now Pageonce gives users the option to pay immediately from their choice of accounts with a few taps on their smartphone. Pageonce makes paper bills, checks and stamps, and logging into several different websites for online bill pay, obsolete -- helping users save time and avoid annoying late and overdraft fees."

Here's how it works:

Pageonce collects information about a user's bills, including due date, amount due and itemized details, and presents them in an easy-to-read format on a smartphone. Before a bill is due, users get an alert that allows them to pay in three steps:

1. Select how to pay
2. Enter the amount
3. Tap Pay

This service is available on Apple and Android platforms for $4.99 per month.
