Finovate Alums Populate the FinTech50

Looking for the most innovative startups in fintech? The FinTech50 is a great place to start.

It also turns out to be a great place to find Finovate alums. Of the 50 companies recognized by FinTechCity's panels of judges as being "game-changers transforming the future of finance," nearly half are alumni of Finovate conferences - including our upcoming event in London.

Here is the list of alums in alphabetical order:
According to Chris Skinner, who was one of the panelists, more than 700 companies competed for spots in the FinTech50. The selection panel included veterans of finance and technology from companies ranging from American Express and Google to Silicon Valley Bank and UBS. The FinTech50 winners were announced at an invitation-only event in London.

Speaking of London, Five Degrees, InvoiceSharing, Ixaris, mBank, and Trunomi will be in town next month, demonstrating their latest solutions at FinovateEurope 2015, February 10 and 11. More information on the event available here.

In the first quarter of 2014, 23 Finovate alums raised more than $592 million

And as the second quarter draws to a close, it's clear that a comparable cohort of alums have kept the pace.

Over the course April, May, and June, 28 alums raised significant amounts of capital ranging from Gremln's $100,000 to the $65 million raised by Lending Club. The quarterly total of $594 million is almost exactly the same as the previous quarter.

And given that some amounts are undisclosed (I'm talking about you, Holvi, RevolutionCredit, and, we're confident that Finovate alums have notched their second $600 million fund-raising quarter in a row.

How does this compare with the less recent past? Very well, indeed.

In the second quarter of 2013, 15 alums raised more than $200 million. This was a major improvement on the second quarter from 2012, which featured 14 companies raising more than $120 million.

Total raised for Q2 2014 = $594 million

April -- $217 million raised by 11 companies
May --  $226 million raised by 11 companies
June -- $151 million raised by six companies

Note: Funding prior to becoming a Finovate alum not included. Questions? Comments? Email us at or

Would you like a side order of regulatory relief along with your next "million-scale capital investment"?

A combination of a "million euro investment" from European angel fund SpeedInvest, and a regulatory decision that will permit EU-wide operations is great news for Finnish online banking service innovator, Holvi.

SpeedInvest, an investment firm out of Austria, led the new investment in Holvi. The million euros ($1.36 million USD) doubles the company's total funding, and Holvi anticipates using the additional capital to help expand beyond its native Finland, where its online banking services have fared well in testing.

And it is likely no coincidence that the initial target market for Holvi outside of Finland is Austria, home of SpeedInvest.
Calling itself the "long tail of retail banking," Holvi is a micro-enterprise online banking specialist with services geared toward freelancers and small business entrepreneurs. The company's technology does actual book-keeping rather than just simple PFM (personal finance management), and provides an easy way for independent and micro-entrepreneurs to sell their products and services, invoice clients, and track finances.

The company earns its revenues through a small transaction fee of 0.90 euros for incoming and outgoing payments. There is a 3% surcharge for credit card payments, but no cost to opening a Holvi account and no monthly fee.

Holvi has appeared on the Finovate stage twice, at FinovateEurope 2012 and FinovateEurope 2013. The company was founded in 2011, and is headquartered in Helsinki, Finland.

Digital Marketing professionals can use Backbase purely for digital marketing purposes: e.g. collecting user behavior and running campaigns in specific sections of existing websites and platforms, then assigning certain areas where Backbase collects data and shows campaigns.

With Backbase you can now start small. Just embed in your existing site and expand from there, creating a full cross-device user experience platform.

Heckyl FIND (Financial In News & Data) is real time news and data analytics platform for retail traders and brokerages.

FIND helps you explore new ideas and keep pulse on current business events/issues.  Whether you are a short term trader, investor, or fund manager - whether you prefer equities, futures and options, forex or commodities - you will find a wealth of information that matters to you streaming at your fingertips.

Innovation type: Investing & asset management, online

Thumbnail image for HolviLogo.jpg
Holvi is the long tail of retail banking. It changes the whole concept of the bank account from a passive utility to an active enabler of any activity. Out-of-the-box Holvi comes with built-in payment acceptance, tools for financial understanding and the ability to share it with a group. We bring in building blocks from our banking and payments partners that our customers can add to their Holvi accounts.

Holvi is used by small businesses, non-profit organisations, projects and individuals. Holvi is regulated by the FIN-FSA and is located in Finland. Holvi is launching Europe-wide in 2013.

Innovation type: Online, payments small business

Point solutions for payments? Why limit yourself? Proven at scale in Africa, Tereon is a complete payments ecosystem and toolkit designed to support rapid innovation.

With Tereon, you can implement any number of innovative products and payment services, be they point solutions or new networks. You can support any business logic, and you can use existing core systems and settlement processes to provide secure, inter-operable, account-to-account, payments that meet stringent regulatory standards.

We will demonstrate a four-party deployment that supports payments from phone to phone, phone to card terminal, card to terminal and on-line in multiple currencies.

Innovation type: Banking

Metaforic has a product that protects mobile applications from unauthorized changes and subversion of the existing code. In effect, by using our solution, the financial institution has control over what the application does if it is compromised. It can quit, display a message, send a silent security alert to bank servers or any other behavior the developer cares to define.

For financial institutions that have a lot of mobile developments underway, Metaforic technology can be integrated with existing developments at the end of the software development lifecycle. This technology is an automatic process not requiring significant developer time or security expertise.

Innovation type: Security

Pockets United

Thumbnail image for PocketsUnitedLogo.jpg
Pockets United occupies a hot space: carriers see their business threatened by all-encompasing data flats, while traditional banks and credit card companies see payment shifting to mobile devices - whose users are owned by the carriers, ultimately leaving both seeking for differentiators.

BAM! 'Social' is the next big thing in mobile payments, yet it is not easy to implement for existing PSPs or banks. A category killer in this field must be social by design.

Think of us as Paypal, just with a lot more pal - and get excited about a cutting-edge user experience that is fun to use day after day! Because, after all, dividing expenses should lower the burden for all, not cause additional effort for some.

Innovation type: Mobile, payments, PFM

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for rplanHiLogo.jpg
Investing can be time-consuming. rplan has created a simple, easy-to-use tool to create your own personal investment portfolio from over 2,400 available investments to find the ones best suited to you.

rplan is for customers who want choice, but who don't want to become finance specialists just to manage their investments - because there are better things to do in life than researching mutual funds.

Innovation type: Investing & asset management, online, PFM

SumUp's vision is to change commerce on a global scale starting with a real and existing payments problem.

Today, millions of small businesses are missing out on customers because they cannot accept card payments due to high fees and long contract durations. SumUp offers the easiest way for small businesses to accept card payments.

Using only a portable card reader and an app for iOS and Android, merchants can accept card payments on their mobile device, with a transparent fee of only 2.75% per transaction.

SumUp will demo a new cashless point-of-sale solution that will radically simplify the way people pay in every day life.

As promised last week, here is our second "sneak peak" into the hot young startups and established leading companies that will demo their latest fintech innovations at the second annual FinovateEurope next February 7th in London.

As we mentioned in the first sneak peak, we asked each handpicked company to "whet your appetite" by providing a short summary in their own words of the innovation that they will be debuting on stage. We've compiled them below.

Don't miss your chance to see fast-paced demos of the newest ideas from each company and meet the execs responsible for the cutting edge of innovation in financial and banking technology. Plus get your FinovateEurope ticket before December 23rd and you'll lock in the early-bird price!

Backbase will be presenting major new features in its Bank 2.0 Portal Manager, focusing on the following key points:

  • Improved editor for page composition on regular browsers and mobile devices
  • Advanced segmentation and targeting for different customer groups
  • Fully integrated forms editor for enrollment and BPM
  • Advanced analytical and performance tools
Innovation type: Marketing, mobile and tablet UI, online UI

Aimia's unique advertising platform, powered by Cardlytics, enables banks to deliver rich, relevant rewards to their customers. The platform uses customers' unique purchasing history to deliver rewards that strengthen retention rates, increase card usage and improve customer relationships. The Cardlytics platform does all this without the need for any personally identifiable customer data.

Critical to the success of the programme is merchant engagement. Aimia and Cardlytics will be demonstrating the portal which is used by merchants to track offers and report on revenue. The suite of merchant management tools allows merchants to deliver targeted strategies that deliver measurable results.

Innovation type: Cards, marketing, rewards

eToro provides you with immediate access to the largest investment network in the world giving you the ability to quickly find and easily build your own people-based portfolio of top performing traders. Automatically copy every trade your personal dream-team makes into your own investment account and start copying the success of the most successful traders.

eToro reinvents the way people invest their money by propelling them into the fast growing world of social investing. Take advantage of the wisdom of the crowds and make smarter investment decisions with full transparency and control over your invested funds at any given time.

Innovation type: Investing, online UI, PFM

KYC compliance is a hot topic for financial services and Fenergo will introduce its Deal Manager application for client on-boarding, KYC compliance and account opening.

Fenergo will demonstrate how banks and financial institutions can reduce the burden and cost of KYC compliance with its straightforward application which manages all of the complex KYC data gathering and document processes and ensures full compliance with industry regulations.

The best bit is that its Deal Manager application also supports credit processes and legal document execution, so processing new client applications has never been so straightforward.

Innovation type: Back office, sales

An onboarding tool that increases customer engagement at the same time? Figlo offers you a complete solution to gain insight in financial matters on a consumer level. Financial planning is now accessible for everyone on any device.

Curious? Figlo's 7 minute demo will reveal the power of financial insight.

Innovation type: Mobile and tablet UI, sales

Handpoint will be demonstrating the first totally secure mobile Chip & PIN payment solution for tablets and smartphones. The solution supports all card payments; magstripe (MSR), Chip & PIN, Chip & signature and contactless NFC Payments (2012).

With Handpoint's Platform-as-a-Service acquiring, banks and MNOs can offer small/micro merchants card payments, tablets, and smartphones under their own brand name.

Innovation type: Payments, mobile and tablet UI

Holvi replaces the plain old bank account with a current account built from the ground up for group activities. It helps customers collect more money, better understand their finances, and save time for their core activities. Customers include event organisers, sports clubs, and student associations and they can do all their banking with Holvi, without needing another bank account.

Holvi is regulated as a payment services provider by the Finnish Financial Supervisory Authority (FIN-FSA), and it has the necessary banking partnerships in place to operate payment accounts for customers on a pan-European basis.

Innovation type: Banking, online UI, payments

Facebook logins are crucially important. Online banking logins are severely difficult to remember. Can something be done about this and still meet the highest standards of identity security?

Ping Identity will show you how to deliver the best login experience to your prospects and customers. Don't turn them away with form filling and repetitive password requirements. Give them access to your financial networks and partners. Build trust and relationships with your customers.

Innovation type: Identity, marketing, security

Meniga is expanding its PFM solution to add a new, highly user-centric layer on top of traditional online/mobile banks.

The interface de-emphasizes real accounts and actual balances and instead shows "uncommitted balance" and virtual accounts. It also allows users to automate routine tasks and includes an alert framework designed to bring peace of mind by alerting users before bills go unpaid or before any account's balance becomes too low to meet commitments and forecasted expenses.

Innovation type: Online UI, Payments, PFM

Investing is scary. I can invest, but I forget to buy or sell or rebalance. My financial advice has been useless. I want to be in control of my finances. I know I should be doing more with my money.

Nutmeg knows that investing is about more than money. It's a passport to the life you want. That opportunity shouldn't be reserved just for the wealthy, or just for those in-the-know.

Nutmeg asks, what if investing were simple and beautiful? And what if everyone could do it?

Innovation type: Investing, online UI, PFM

Banks around the globe have really struggled to understand how they can leverage the power of Facebook.

Serverside has developed a new and unique way to leverage Facebook in an exciting and engaging manner that drives real brand value, loyalty and engagement from your customers.

Innovation type: Cards, marketing

Going paperless saves money and improves customer service. However, most customers are not switching off paper because the registration process is inconvenient, complicated and results in having to remember another username and password and to fetch the document every month.

Striata's eConsent puts you in control of the paperless conversion process. Its clients are exceeding their paperless objectives and achieving a positive ROI in a matter of months.

Innovation type: Back office, communications, marketing

What would make the biggest impact on the way you manage cash flow and financing? Improved processes? Streamlined operations? Or maybe more flexibility in the way you manage payment terms with suppliers?

Things change. Shift happens. Tradeshift has already transformed invoicing, now its doing the same with supply chain finance.

Innovation type: Back office, payments, small business
