If you're a merchant on the Shopify e-commerce platform with a hankering to join the cryptocurrency revolution, then Coinbase has some very good news for you.

Thanks to a new integration of Coinbase's technology, the more than 100,000 merchants that rely on Shopify to do business online will be able to start accepting payment in bitcoin as early as Tuesday.

The process involves setting up a Coinbase account, initiating the integration on Shopify, providing account credentials, and that's it. Already on board are merchants such as Leap Motion, Soylent, and iOgrapher.
Coinbase is a bitcoin payment processing and digital wallet platform that makes bitcoin transactions easier and safer. The company holds more than one million consumer wallets, and enables more than 28,000 merchants to accept payment in bitcoin. There are no fees charged for the first $1,000,000 in transactions, with merchants paying a 1% exchange fee beyond that amount. Coinbase's most recent innovation, demoed at FinovateSpring in San Jose this year, is called Instant Exchange and helps remove exchange rate risk from bitcoin transactions.

Coinbase has had a busy first half of 2014. The company's technology was integrated with Intuit's PayByCoin in June. And Coinbase earned a spot on CNBC's Disruptor 50 list shortly after announcing its acquisition of Kippt in May.

Founded in 2012 and headquartered in San Francisco, Coinbase was co-founded by Brian Armstrong (CEO) and Fred Ehrsam (President).

Developers! Curious how Coinbase makes it easy for merchants to add bitcoin payment functionality to their businesses and apps? Learn more about Coinbase's Bitcoin API here. And be sure to check out our FinDEVr page for updates on the first event for fintech developers.

Founded in January. Launched in March (see their FinovateSpring 2013 demo). Acquired in August.

That pretty much sums up a very productive 2013 for online tax preparation/planning software company, GoodApril.

The company announced on Thursday that it had been acquired by financial services giant, Intuit, for an undisclosed amount. GoodApril had been scheduled to make their pitch at Techstars Boulder/Denver Demo Day when the news broke. Undaunted, the innovative startup made its presentation anyway, a presentation that must have seemed as much acceptance speech as elevator pitch.

Thumbnail image for IntuitLogo.jpg
GoodApril's Tax CheckUp solution allows users to anticipate and prepare for potential tax liability in the tax year to come. Headquartered in San Francisco, and having only three employees, the company bills itself as the tax software for "the other 364 days of the year." Tax Checkup analyzes previous tax returns and makes recommendations over the course of the year to ensure that taxpayers pay only what is owed on Tax Day.

Intuit has already one popular product in the tax preparation software market, TurboTax. However, like most tax preparation software packages, TurboTax is designed to help taxpayers prepare tax returns for previous years. Good April's forward-looking approach gives taxpayers a chance to make potentially money-saving changes before it's time to file.

Intuit, creator of TurboTax and Quickbooks, announced today that it will sell Intuit Financial Services (IFS) to Thoma Bravo, a private equity investing firm.

Intuit purchased IFS in 2007 (it was then known as Digital Insight) for $1.35 billion. Some analysts have pointed to slow revenue growth as a reason for the sale. According to Reuters:

"IFS, which provides banking software to financial institutions, reported a revenue growth of 9 percent for the quarter ended April. In contrast, revenue at Intuit's small business unit rose 17 percent and that at its consumer tax division increased 14 percent."

Thumbnail image for intuit.jpgThe latest on American mobile payment companies making a play for Europe?

PayPal says it's on the way. And Square so far is nowhere to be found. Which makes Intuit's announcement that it is launching its Intuit Pay mobile payments service in the United Kingdom all the more provocative.

UK consumers have been waiting for Intuit Pay since the fall of 2012, when the company announced its intention to break into the mobile payments market in Europe. Starting in the UK, Intuit hopes to expand both to a wider European audience, as well as globally. This would follow in the pattern of previous, successful, region-by-region rollouts (i.e., Intuit's QuickBooks).

Consumers in the United States can currently take advantage of Intuit's GoPayment app, which is functionally the same service as Intuit Pay.

Intuit Pay will be available initially as an iOS app, with other platforms to be added in the near future (including Android). Intuit is offering its reader for free for a limited time.

The company's move to the UK may have been encouraged in part by results from a survey suggesting that 47% of the small business respondents would accept cards if there were more affordable options, such as a smartphone or tablet. Currently, less than 20% of companies with less than 10 employees accept card payments.

Intuit was last on the Finovate stage in September 2009. The company demoed an integration of TurboTax for Online Banking with FinanceWorks.

International FX payments service, The Currency Cloud today announced on its blog that it will partner with three other fintech companies, including e-invoicing company Tradeshift and SMB financial services company Intuit.

Through this partnership, the three will create an all-inclusive platform for TradeshiftLogo.jpg small businesses to better maintain cross-border relationships. The platform will focus especially on buyer-supplier relationships.

The terms of this deal have not been disclosed.

The Currency Cloud demonstrated at FinovateEurope last month, and its demo video will be posted here in a few weeks. Tradeshift demoed at FinovateEurope 2012, and Intuit demoed at Finovate 2009.
