Finovate Alums Populate the FinTech50

Looking for the most innovative startups in fintech? The FinTech50 is a great place to start.

FinTech50_homepage.jpg
It also turns out to be a great place to find Finovate alums. Of the 50 companies recognized by FinTechCity’s panels of judges as being “game-changers transforming the future of finance,” nearly half are alumni of Finovate conferences – including our upcoming event in London.
Here is the list of alums in alphabetical order:
According to Chris Skinner, who was one of the panelists, more than 700 companies competed for spots in the FinTech50. The selection panel included veterans of finance and technology from companies ranging from American Express and Google to Silicon Valley Bank and UBS. The FinTech50 winners were announced at an invitation-only event in London.
Speaking of London, Five Degrees, InvoiceSharing, Ixaris, mBank, and Trunomi will be in town next month, demonstrating their latest solutions at FinovateEurope 2015, February 10 and 11. More information on the event available here.

Finovate Alums Raise More than $600 Million for Second Quarter in a Row

Thumbnail image for FinovateFundingIMG.jpg

In the first quarter of 2014, 23 Finovate alums raised more than $592 million

And as the second quarter draws to a close, it’s clear that a comparable cohort of alums have kept the pace.

Over the course April, May, and June, 28 alums raised significant amounts of capital ranging from Gremln’s $100,000 to the $65 million raised by Lending Club. The quarterly total of $594 million is almost exactly the same as the previous quarter.

And given that some amounts are undisclosed (I’m talking about you, Holvi, RevolutionCredit, and Tuition.io), we’re confident that Finovate alums have notched their second $600 million fund-raising quarter in a row.
How does this compare with the less recent past? Very well, indeed.
In the second quarter of 2013, 15 alums raised more than $200 million. This was a major improvement on the second quarter from 2012, which featured 14 companies raising more than $120 million.
Total raised for Q2 2014 = $594 million
April — $217 million raised by 11 companies
May —  $226 million raised by 11 companies
June — $151 million raised by six companies

Note: Funding prior to becoming a Finovate alum not included. Questions? Comments? Email us at David@Finovate.com or Julie@Finovate.com

Holvi Announces New Million Euro Investment

Holvi Announces New Million Euro Investment

Thumbnail image for HolviLogo.jpg

Would you like a side order of regulatory relief along with your next “million-scale capital investment”?

A combination of a “million euro investment” from European angel fund SpeedInvest, and a regulatory decision that will permit EU-wide operations is great news for Finnish online banking service innovator, Holvi.

SpeedInvest, an investment firm out of Austria, led the new investment in Holvi. The million euros ($1.36 million USD) doubles the company’s total funding, and Holvi anticipates using the additional capital to help expand beyond its native Finland, where its online banking services have fared well in testing.

And it is likely no coincidence that the initial target market for Holvi outside of Finland is Austria, home of SpeedInvest.
Holvi_homepage_new
Calling itself the “long tail of retail banking,” Holvi is a micro-enterprise online banking specialist with services geared toward freelancers and small business entrepreneurs. The company’s technology does actual book-keeping rather than just simple PFM (personal finance management), and provides an easy way for independent and micro-entrepreneurs to sell their products and services, invoice clients, and track finances.
The company earns its revenues through a small transaction fee of 0.90 euros for incoming and outgoing payments. There is a 3% surcharge for credit card payments, but no cost to opening a Holvi account and no monthly fee.
Holvi has appeared on the Finovate stage twice, at FinovateEurope 2012 and FinovateEurope 2013. The company was founded in 2011, and is headquartered in Helsinki, Finland.
