U.S. credit-card debt sank to an eight-year low, so SmartyPig is celebrating by holding a cash-prize contest.
New and existing SmartyPig users are invited to vie for the cash prize totaling $4,951, the average amount each U.S. household owes on credit cards.
Contest entrants must set up a new automatic savings goal named "race out of debt" with an initial contribution of $25. Eight finalists will be chosen at random and the big winner will be chosen in typically bizarre SmartyPig fashion, by a pig race taking place on September 28. During the first week, more than 6,000 SmartyPig users established a qualifying goal.
Contest rules can be found online here.
This isn't the first outrageous contest by SmartyPig; in fact, it's just an expansion of its regular contests. SmartyPig holds monthly giveaways for three $100 gift cards on Facebook and Twitter, and uploads videos of their oddball methods of choosing winners (blindfolded dart contest, or two-story watermelon toss, anyone?). Videos are posted here.
With 75% of its customers between the ages of 18 and 35, and 95% between 18 and 45, SmartyPig relies on Twitter, Facebook and contests to spread the word. As of Aug. 1, total deposits stand at $500 million. SmartyPig users have also reached more than $300 million in goals, all with nearly $0 in advertising expenditures.
