Draw up a list of the top fintech innovators of 2014. Got it? Now tell me how many of your top 50 companies are not just impressive companies in their respective fields, but Finovate alums, as well.

If you are global accounting and consulting group, KPMG, then the answer is "more than half."

Of the 50 companies recognized by KPMG in its 2014 review of top fintech innovators, 27 have demoed their technologies at Finovate conferences. And of that 27, 13 have won Best of Show at least once.

50Fintechreport.jpg
The inaugural "50 Best Fintech Innovators" report is a joint venture between AWI Ventures KPMG Australia and the Financial Services Council (FSC).

The companies chosen were selected based on four factors: total capital raised, rate of capital raising, degree of sub industry disruption, and "degree of product, service, customer experience and business model innovation."

Writing in an introduction to the report, AWI Limited CEO Ben Heap explained why fundraising played such a prominent part of the selection process.

"These assessment criteria reflect the fact that venture capital invested is a relevant measure of innovation which in turn fuels enduring competitive advantage," he wrote.

"Venture capitalists seek this enduring competitive advantage over and above everything else."

Here's a breakdown of Finovate alums in the list, in order of appearance, along with links to their most recent demo video. Boldface indicates Best of Show winner.

FinovateLOGO.jpg

If an investment portfolio gets optimized through an online investment advisor, do brick and mortar brokers make a sound?

As noted in today's Wall Street Journal, many of the kinds of services that once were accessible only by high net worth investors patronizing financial advisors and planners in person are now available to the rest of us. This includes everything from using computer algorithms to make investment decisions to automatic portfolio rebalancing and asset allocation.

And of the seven companies highlighted in the column for helping make this possible, every single one is a Finovate alum.

In fact, two of the seven - FutureAdvisor and LearnVest - will be demoing their latest technology on the Finovate stage in New York next week for FinovateFall 2013.

The reasons for the growth in online investment advisory are as varied as the companies themselves. Some cite a new generation of investors far more comfortable with both handling their own finances and trusting the Internet to help. Others suggest that with Wall Street falling into disfavor in the wake of the financial crisis, more investors are willing to seek out non-traditional - and less expensive - sources of information and advice.

Bill Doyle, an analyst for Forrester Research who has studied the industry for more than a decade and is quoted in the column, puts it this way: "I'm paying a lot more attention this time around because the software required to transform this industry finally works."

Whatever the reason, there's no doubt that venture capitalists believe this time is different. Consider the funding success of the above seven companies in the past two years ago:

Note also that Wealthfront, which helps get investors into low-cost diversified portfolios, has assets under management (AUM) of $300 million. Betterment has a similar model and has AUM of $250 million.

The wealth management industry has seen increased press coverage lately. Take, for example, The Economist's recent piece discussing how increased competition from startups has tempted clients into moving assets to lower-cost alternatives.

The article mentions DCisions, a startup tackling the big data around client portfolios. It also highlights Personal Capital, which launched at FinovateFall. The Economist states that the startup's online platform:

DCisionsLogo.jpgThumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for PersonalCapitalLogo.jpg

"... tries to straddle the world between cheap online wealth management and the old world of private banking"

Aside from the cost, one of the largest benefits of moving your
millions into a startup like Personal Capital is that the investment advice is unbiased. This is a topic that Business Insider covered last week, voicing concerns that clients' brokers are "royally screwing them over."

The article states:

WealthMgmt.jpg

"With no other fees to compare your own to, you could wind up paying for far more than you should - especially if your broker's working on commission."

To ease this concern, the article recommends using
DIY tools such as SigFig, FutureAdvisor, or Jemstep. These tools help you see how your funds are performing and how much you're paying in fees.

Earlier this week, SigFig announced that it was one of eight startups to win the Windows 8 First Apps Contest.

The contest gave developers three weeks to create an app for the Windows 8 platform that would be available for demo on the Windows 8 consumer preview.

The Windows 8 contest judges were impressed with SigFig:

"SigFig Portfolio allows you to track your financial portfolio from various brokerage accounts, get related news, see how investments perform against major indexes, explore various analytics, track movement in your portfolio, and get investor recommendations. The SigFig team took the opportunity to deliver exciting new features to the SigFig Portfolio app for Windows 8 that they haven't yet released on the SigFig website."
