SecondMarket, a secondary trading market for pre-IPO companies, announced today that it has partnered with CircleUp, an equity-based crowdfunding platform.

PandoDaily reported today that New York-based SecondMarket will cross-list companies raising funding on the CircleUp platform. This gives SecondMarket users the ability to invest in the equity of early-stage companies. So far, five companies have completed funding rounds on the CircleUp platform.

This news comes three weeks after SecondMarket's announcement of a similar partnership with AngelList.

SecondMarket demonstrated at FinovateStartup 2009.

Yesterday alternative investment marketplace, SecondMarket released a snapshot of the private companies that use its platform.

The survey, which is meant to paint a picture of the typical private company using SecondMarket, is based on a six-month assessment over the course of the first half of 2012.

Here are some highlights:

    • Companies use the SecondMarket platform for three main reasons:
        1. Replace early shareholders with new, strategic investors who are supportive of the company's long-term vision
        2. Attract and retain key employees
        3. Satisfy liquidity demands of their shareholders
    • $329 million average market cap
    • $108 million average funding received
    • Average company age is 7 years
    • Preferred stock accounts for almost 60% of shares sold
    • Almost 50% of companies using SecondMarket are in the gaming industry, while 10% represent the financial industry
    • Hedge Funds represent almost half of all buyers, while Family Offices account for a little over 20%

2011 was a big year for IPOs and that has been reflected in the growth of secondary marketplace, SecondMarket

Yesterday, Forbes published statistics on the startup's performance over its three years of operation:

    • In 2011, private company transactions totaled $558 million
    • From 2011 to 2010, private company transactions increased 55%
    • Since it began in 2008, the startup has exceeded $1 billion in deals
    • In 2011, over 61% of transactions were in the social media and consumer web space

2011 Sellers:

    • 79% were ex-employees
    • 11% were employees
    • 4% were investors
    • Less than 1% were founders

2011 Buyers (by dollar value):

    • 73% were institutions
    • 27% were individuals

The top 10 most watched companies on SecondMarket (as of 4Q 2011):

The results were impressive:

  • A total of 34 companies received funding, some more than once
  • The companies collectively raised over $423 million dollars
  • The months with the highest number of companies receiving funding were June August, both with 8 companies
  • The highest amount of funding came in the month of June, when the alumni brought in over $124.4 million
Here is a month-by-month breakdown of funding received:

January -- $40.8 million raised by 3 companies

February -- $10.3+ million raised by 3 companies

March -- $20.4 million raised by 4 companies

June -- $124.4 million raised by 8 companies

July -- $1.1 million raised by 1 company

August -- $103.4 million raised by 8 companies

September -- $33 million raised by 1 company

October-- $22 million raised by 2 companies

November -- $16.3+ million raised by 3 companies

December -- $52.2 million raised by 5 companies
