Growing the business and expanding offshore are now possible thanks to the $8 million (£4.7 million) in funding just raised by Moven.

Leading the series A round was SBT Venture Capital. Among those also participating were:

  • Anthemis Group
  • New York Angels
  • Route 66 Ventures
  • Standard Bank
Additional unnamed angel investors were also involved in the round. This latest investment takes Moven's total capital to more than $12 million.

Moven founder and CEO Brett King broke the news at the Wired Money conference on Tuesday. And as reported in Wired UK, Moven will also be announcing two major partnerships, one in Canada and one in New Zealand, that Brett believes will help take the company closer to its 10 million app download goal.
Moven_homepage_July14
Moven helps consumers better control their spending and manage their finances without traditional budgeting. What is compelling is the way Moven tracks not just whether spending is above or below trend, but also where the extra spending is coming from. This gives users a great deal of insight, as well as a lot of control over spending and saving. Moven's technology includes a mobile app, a debit card, and a contactless sticker.

Moven emerged from beta this spring after receiving more than 100,000 invite requests from eager, would-be early adopters. Shortly afterward, the company announced that it had partnered with fellow Finovate alum, MoneyDesktop, to make it easier for Moven users to aggregate their outside accounts.

Moven was founded in March 2011, and is headquartered in New York City.

Winner of a Best of Show award for their demo at FinovateEurope 2013, Moven was last on the Finovate stage for FinovateSpring 2013 in San Francisco. See a demo of the company in action here.

Last week, Moven launched its mobile money management platform to the public. Apparently, the New York-based startup has been busy because today it announced that its partnering with MoneyDesktop, which is known for its PFM platform that is so visually appealing it will make bankers drool.

MoneyDesktopSmLogo2.jpg

This new partnership is all about the magic that happens on the backend. Moven will be using MoneyDesktop's API to aggregate external accounts. Benefits of using MoneyDesktop's API include:

    • Better account aggregation
    • More accurate transaction categorization
    • Faster transaction updates

This is good news for me personally since I've had difficulty syncing two of my outside bank accounts with Moven (see below).

MovenAcctSyncFail.jpg

MoneyDesktop takes pride in its account aggregation. I caught up with MoneyDesktop's Matt West last week at the Bank Innovation conference in Seattle, and he asserted that, regardless of what the front end of MoneyDesktop's budgeting platform looks like, the real value is in the integration. MoneyDesktop is able to compete with giants like Intuit and Yodlee because it categorizes 98%* of the transactions correctly.

Moven joins the 400+ other financial institutions and the 29 online banking, core and payment network providers that use MoneyDesktop's API for account integration.

To see the companies in action, check out Moven's FinovateSpring 2013 demo and MoneyDesktop's most recent demo from FinovateFall 2013.

After the Simple superstorm a couple of weeks ago, another neobank darling, Moven, is making headlines with the announcement that it is launching out of beta to the general public.

Now that it's no longer limited to invite-only, anyone can sign up for the New York-based startup's platform. Additionally, new users have the option to open a Moven account directly from their mobile device, as seen below.

MovenAccountOpenUX.jpgIn a blog post on Friday, TechCrunch reported the following stats about Moven:

    • Has 5,000 registered users
    • Received more than 100,000 requests for invites
    • Helps manage over $300 million in customer spending (this is not funds under management, which Moven declines to disclose).
    • About 60% of users link at least 2 external accounts

"Safer" by way of new security measures that allow users to suspend and unsuspend an account via smartphone in case of card loss or theft. And "surer" courtesy of more accurate, real-time spending updates to make it easier to manage personal finances.

The new features will be available on Moven's new iOS app due out this week.

The third quarter of 2013 revealed that even during the sleepy days of summer, the business of putting capital into the coffers of fintech innovators remained as busy as ever.

Finovate alumni were the beneficiaries of more than $171 million during July, August, and September. This brings the total year-to-date funding for Finovate alumni to at least $526 million (some of the funding amounts were undisclosed).

Here is the Q3 summary for 2013:

July -- More than $63 million raised by eight companies
August -- More than $26 million raised by six companies
September -- $82 million raised by nine companies
Note: Fundings prior to a Finovate appearance not included. Questions? Comments? Email us at julie@finovate.com or david@finovate.com.

A strategic partnership announced by Moven will bring investment capital to the company's mobile money management service, now in beta in the U.S.

Thumbnail image for MovenLogoNew.jpg

The amount of the investment was not disclosed. Nevertheless the capital comes courtesy of Russian venture capital firm, Life.SREDA, which specializes in mobile and online fintech initiatives around the world.

In addition to helping raise Moven's profile in markets in Eastern Europe and Russia, the investment is slated to support early stage development in the company's signature service.

LifeSREDAhomepage.jpg
News of the company's partnership with Life.SREDA comes just one day after Moven announced a deal with mobile payments company, Payveris. The agreement will bring bill pay and money transfer features to Moven's money mangement platform.

New York-based Moven was founded in 2011, and has raised more than $2.5M in seed funding heading into this week's announcement. The company was last on the Finovate stage as part of the Spring show in San Francisco earlier this year. See Moven's demo here.
