Just a few minutes with FutureAdvisor may leave you wondering, "Is that all there is to financial planning?"

Image representing FutureAdvisor as depicted i...

Whether you are just starting to save for retirement, or have been investing in your 401(k) for years, the financial services industry does the average investor few favors when it comes to making the world of stocks and bonds any easier to understand. It's no wonder why many investors give up.

If you're not ready to throw yourself on the mercy of the stock market, consider this: in the same way that Wall Street and hedge fund pros use technology to better diversify their assets and grow their investments, retail investors have taken to online resources like FutureAdvisor to get control of their finances and put their money to work more efficiently.

Think about it: Does anyone remember the days before tax-preparation software?  I don't, at least not very well. The rise of TurboTax completely changed the game for tax novices. Talk about empowerment!

We are seeing a similar shift when it comes to retirement planning and the financial services industry. Now, with web apps and online resources, the average investor can begin diversifying, allocating, and growing his or her investments without the expense, hassle or headache of hiring a full-time financial planner.

FutureAdvisor art 1.jpg

FutureAdvisor includes a helpful "Know Your Risk Tolerance" questionnaire to help customize investment recommendations.

FutureAdvisor has been around since 2010. Built by a team of engineering experts and run by a staff of investment professionals, FutureAdvisor combines a clean, easy-to-use interface with a sound, time-tested investing and retirement-planning methodology. This allows the average investor to take full advantage of the latest research in strategies for proper asset allocation, diversification, and keeping costs low.

So how does FutureAdvisor do it? After answering a few basic questions about your background, income, and retirement goals, you'll see how quickly FutureAdvisor shows you just how much you need to save each month in order to have the money and lifestyle you want later. FutureAdvisor also provides a recommended strategy for properly allocating assets based on the information you provide.

FutureAdvisor art 4.jpg

Conservative, moderate, or aggressive?  FutureAdvisor provides stock, bond, and low-cost mutual and exchange-traded fund recommendations for every investment style.

There's more. Academic research has proven that rebalancing your portfolio regularly can make a major difference in how your investments perform over the long haul. But rebalancing can be difficult and time-consuming. That is where FutureAdvisor shines. Its unique algorithms help you easily make the necessary portfolio adjustments. It also sends email reminders when it is time to rebalance.

FutureAdvisor lets you know when high fees may be damaging your portfolio, going so far as to recommend alternative investments such as no-load mutual funds to lower costs. The service also reviews the tax efficiency of your portfolio and suggests ways to keep your tax burden as low as possible.

It is easy to get started with FutureAdvisor. Within minutes of setting up my account, I was reading a Portfolio Analysis Dashboard that showed my total assets, how well they were diversified, the impact of fees, and the overall tax efficiency of the portfolio.

FutureAdvisor art 2.jpg

Clear and easy-to-read charts and graphs allow investors to see and understand exactly what is in their portfolios.

Your mileage may vary. But thanks to FutureAdvisor, I learned that my diversification was not as good as I thought it was, my portfolio fees were lower than I thought they were, and I could probably contribute more to my 401(k). What's nice is that you can go back and make changes and see what kind of impact they would have on your overall retirement planning picture. How much would you have to save if you worked a little longer? How much would you have to save if you wanted a little higher income in your golden years? With a few clicks, FutureAdvisor will show and tell all.

This is all part of the free ("basic") side of FutureAdvisor. Future plans include a premium version that provides automatic rebalancing and portfolio maintenance. Stay tuned for more on that front.

The wealth management industry has seen increased press coverage lately. Take, for example, The Economist's recent piece discussing how increased competition from startups has tempted clients into moving assets to lower-cost alternatives.

The article mentions DCisions, a startup tackling the big data around client portfolios. It also highlights Personal Capital, which launched at FinovateFall. The Economist states that the startup's online platform:

DCisionsLogo.jpgThumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for PersonalCapitalLogo.jpg

"... tries to straddle the world between cheap online wealth management and the old world of private banking"

Aside from the cost, one of the largest benefits of moving your
millions into a startup like Personal Capital is that the investment advice is unbiased. This is a topic that Business Insider covered last week, voicing concerns that clients' brokers are "royally screwing them over."

The article states:

WealthMgmt.jpg

"With no other fees to compare your own to, you could wind up paying for far more than you should - especially if your broker's working on commission."

To ease this concern, the article recommends using
DIY tools such as SigFig, FutureAdvisor, or Jemstep. These tools help you see how your funds are performing and how much you're paying in fees.

To learn more about these companies, watch DCisions' FinovateEurope 2012 demo, Personal Capital's FinovateFall 2011 demo, SigFig's FinovateFall 2011 demo, FutureAdvisor's FinovateSpring 2012 demo (coming soon), or Jemstep's FinovateSpring 2010 demo

Kicking off the final afternoon session, FutureAdvisor showed how its new platform gives actionable investment advice:

"FutureAdvisor is demoing FutureAdvisor 401(k) Advice, which supports more than 100 of the largest 401(k) plans in the country. With company-specific data about which 401(k) Plans have which specific investment options, FutureAdvisor is able to algorithmically give step-by-step investment advice to investors that takes into account their investment goals, their existing investments elsewhere, and their 401(k)'s limited plan options.

Though other companies have tried to tackle the problem of advising users on their IRA or taxable accounts, no free web service has been available to give specific, actionable advice on investors' 401(k) accounts because of the complexity involved, until now.

With FutureAdvisor's step-by-step advice that takes an investor's 401(k) and other accounts holistically into consideration, investors will be able to save on hidden fund fees, better diversify, and improve their tax efficiency."

Balance Street

The premier direct marketplace between consumers and creditors for the purpose of debt settlement, Balance Street, provides consumers the opportunity to relieve their debt burden without fees. Consumers use its web-based automated system to negotiate with creditors directly, avoiding debt settlement companies who charge exorbitant fees (up to 20% of total debt owed).

Eliminating this 20% market inefficiency makes for a better financial outcome for consumers and creditors. With over $780 billion in credit card debt in the U.S., the Balance Street technology will revolutionize the way debt is settled.

So now when U.S. banks will be rolling out new multi-layered security on the front-end following FFIEC, will we see the same thing here?

With BehavioSec's solution there is a better choice. They add multilayered security through the use of behavioral biometrics. So when the user connects via mobile or online, the technology helps verify that they are who they say they are. Learn more at FinovateSpring 2012.

TascetLogo.jpg
The dawn of compliance solutions that work.

Meet Molly. 115 different people use Molly's SSN.
Financial institutions have no idea who these people really are.

This is possible because FIs and so-called identity protection companies can only verify identity. Verification is not enough. Full identification is needed to fight fraud and provide FIs the means to meet compliance requirements. Only Financial ICONN from TASCET can identify financial customers.

Once Molly activates her ICONN, TASCET proactively secures her identity and FIs know exactly who she is.
