Narrative Science Launches Quill Portfolio Review

Narrative Science Launches Quill Portfolio Review

NarrativeScience_homepage_June2015

According to Narrative Science, wealth managers today are challenged to provide better results for their clients, at a faster rate, and under tighter regulatory scrutiny than ever before.

Fortunately, help is on the way in the form of Quill Portfolio Review, a new solution from Narrative Science made available this week. Quill Portfolio Review leverages the company’s core technology to make it easier for wealth managers to engage with their customers in a far more personalized, efficient way.

Narrative Science CEO Stuart Frankel said, “With Quill, leading financial organizations are providing automated, fully compliant and custom communications for millions of clients that give them the power to understand investments and make financial decisions about their futures.”

NarrativeScience_FF2013_stage

From left: Tim Bixler, Credit Suisse managing director and global head of HOLT; Kris Hammond, Narrative Science chief scientist, demonstrated Quill at FinovateFall 2013.

Quill, the core technology behind the solution, was first introduced to Finovate audiences at FinovateSpring 2013. Quill takes structured data and “mines it for meaning and insight.” The platform then renders those insights in a natural language document that can be anything from a tweet to a major research document.

“As a horizontal platform, Quill is subject-matter agnostic,” Frankel explained. “Now we are focused on building specific products for specific problems.”

In the financial services space, Quill technology is being used to create institutional portfolio commentary, a solution they’ve been selling to large mutual funds and asset managers for the past year or so. Creating this material on a quarterly basis has been historically both very expensive and time-consuming. But Quill has turned this process from a matter of weeks to a matter of seconds. “It used to take an army of people” to put these together every quarter, Frankel explained.

Narrative Science is now ramping up development of tools like the wealth-management-reporting solution being used for institutional portfolio commentary. Quill Portfolio Review is the latest example.

Frankel argued that the fundamental problem addressed by Quill and Narrative Science is how to turn all the data that we collect into truly actionable information. While infographics and 3-D visualizations can be illuminating, there is still no better way to convey data than through a story, a narrative. And that’s precisely what Narrative Science’s technology does.

StuartFrankel_NarrativeScience“Compare that with what happens today,” Frankel said. “You log into some proprietary interface, see a table, closing prices, up arrows, down arrows, pie charts, indices … And you either feel good or bad compared to a benchmark that you probably don’t understand.”

The result is the very definition of a poor user experience. “The idea to make consumers do more work doesn’t make a lot of sense,” said Frankel. Instead, he suggests, “Why not actually pull out the information that the individual investor needs to make individual decisions and give it to them in a natural language document?”

As such, Quill Portfolio Review can be thought of as having two parts. The first is the personalized narrative communications for the client. The second is the portfolio analysis conducted in natural language for financial advisers. And in the same way that a better user experience is key to better engagement with the client, providing performance analyses and goal-based portfolio summaries is a major productivity enhancement for advisers.

There is a real compliance aspect to this solution, as well. He pointed out that financial advisers are talking with clients and each other on an ad hoc basis all the time, all day. “That’s a lot of interactions taking place outside the walls of the institution that could be running up against rules and regulations about various disclosures, privacy, etc,” Frankel said. Quill can be configured in a compliant way, reducing institutional risk.

Narrative Science will present Quill Portfolio Review at In|Vest with customer and investor, USAA, on Thursday, 18 July 18 2015 at the New York Hilton Midtown.

Founded in 2010 and headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, Narrative Science was last on the Finovate stage in the fall of 2013. Chief Scientist Kris Hammond was joined by Credit Suisse Managing Director Tim Bixler in demonstrating Quill.

Finovate Alums Win Leading Vendor Honors from MyPrivateBanking Research

Finovate Alums Win Leading Vendor Honors from MyPrivateBanking Research

MyPrivateBankingResearch_homepage

eMoney Advisor, MicroStrategy, Yseop. What do these three companies have in common? In addition to being Finovate alums, all three were recognized by MyPrivateBanking Research as “leading vendors” in the field of digital solution providers for wealth managers and financial advisers.

The three companies join 12 others in MyPrivateBanking Research’s latest report “Digital and Mobile Solutions for Financial Advisers 2015”. The report focuses on innovations and technical contributions to the wealth management industry that take the form of “mobile apps, digital communications, and analytical and social media solutions.”

emoneyadvisor_homepage

Swiss-based MyPrivateBanking Research has for over a decade provided analysis on how financial services companies use the Internet, social media, and mobile to engage customers. The judging process for the report included looking at 45 different potential features for mobile apps, 15 factors in assessing digital communications technology, and eight features for social media solutions. The report includes analysis of each company and its technology, as well as “individual recommendations for each vendor on how to improve its offerings.”

From the report’s executive summary:

We see that traditional wealth managers cannot defend their business model against robo-advisers and other digital do-it-yourself tools by merely pointing out that their advisers offer a ‘human touch’ and specific banking know-how. They need to reinvent their business model from the ground up in order to arrive in the 21st century.

Microstrategy_homepage

eMoney Advisor was highlighted in the report in the mobile app category. eMoney Advisor made its Finovate debut at FinovateFall 2014, introducing a “reboot” of its wealth-planning system for financial advisers, EMX. The company was founded in 2000, and is headquartered in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. Last month, eMoney Advisor announced that it had been acquired by Fidelity Investments for $250 million. Read our Finovate Debut post for eMoney Advisor.

Founded in 1989 and based in Tyson’s Corner, Virginia, MicroStrategy specializes in enterprise software. The company’s solutions range from its Business Intelligence (BI) platform to its Mobile Platform and Applications to Usher, the mobile identity network MicroStrategy unveiled at its Finovate appearance in San Francisco in the spring of 2013. Like eMoney Advisor, MicroStrategy was also recognized by MyPrivateBanking Research for its mobile app development platform.

Yseop_homepage

Yseop may seem an unlikely member of this trio; however, the company distinguished itself as a resource for financial managers in the “analytics, natural language generation and other solutions” category. An innovator in the field of putting artificial intelligence to use to support business operations, Yseop has developed technologies like Yseop Sales Force Productivity Suite (demoed at FinovateSpring 2014) and Yseop Financial Suite (demoed at FinovateFall 2013). The company was founded in 2008, and is headquartered in both Dallas, Texas, and Lyon, France. John Rauscher is CEO.

Also noted in the report were Finovate alums Crealogix (mobile apps), Temenos (mobile apps), and Narrative Science (analytics, natural language generation, and other solutions).

Narrative Science Raises $10 Million in Round Led by USAA

Thumbnail image for NarrativeSciLogo13.jpg

Narrative Science has raised $10 million in new funding in a round led by USAA. The round included participation from previous investors Battery Ventures, Jump Capital, and Sapphire Ventures (formerly SAP Ventures), and brings the company’s total capital to more than $32 million. According to VentureWire, the investment gives Narrative Science a valuation of $100 million.

Narrative Science CEO Stuart Frankel said “our relationship with USAA will allow both companies to deliver highly-scalable solutions that will turn mountains of financial data into information that can be easily understood and acted on by millions of people.”

NarrativeScience_homepage.jpg
The investment in Narrative Science is more than just an infusion of capital. The company has also announced a software partnership with USAA that will deploy Narrative Science’s Quill technology to build a financial information library for USAA’s 10 million members.
Narrative Science was recently in the fintech headlines with news that NHS Choices selected the technology to help deliver healthcare information earlier this fall. Company CTO Kris Hammond was featured in the Business Insider’s Technology section this summer, and this spring, Narrative Science launched its free app, QuillEngage.

The Series D round comes amid growing interest in the intersection between big data/data analytics and intelligent/virtual assistance via natural language processing (see our coverage of the recent Goldman Sachs investment in Kensho). Indeed, reporting the industry of late often comes with “probability of computerization” infographics like this one from Gigaom, suggesting what kinds of work are likely to be replaced by technologies like Narrative Science.
“The Narrative Sciences announcement is just another baby step in this direction, where perhaps as many as 400 million people will have to find other work as their occupations are taken over by AI,” Gigaon warns.
Narrative Science has heard this one before. Most recently, in a blog post from August titled “Disruptive Technology – Nothing New to See Here”, CEO Stuart Frankel wrote that his first instinct was always to challenge the notion of technology causing job losses. But concluded that this was just the way the world works. “Old jobs vanish as new ones appear,” he wrote. “Otherwise, we’d all just be a group of unemployed farmers.” Frankel added:
“Will people lose their jobs due to technology such as Quill? It’s possible. But the reality is that the technology provides substantial benefits to both organizations and individuals. And in my opinion, those that embrace this technology will hold a competitive advantage in their market sector.”
Founded in January 2010 and based in Chicago, Narrative Science demoed its Quill technology at FinovateFall 2013 in New York.
