simpleLogoNew.jpg

In a different take on the story of Old Meets New today, we've seen Old Acquires New. Simple, a 5-year-old neobank has been acquired by BBVA, a 150-year-old bank that ranks in the top 15 in the world.

BBVAHiLogo.jpg

BBVA purchased Simple, which has raised $15.3 million since being founded in 2009, for $117 million.

SimpleScreenshot22014.jpg

Those of us with Simple accounts need not worry, however, because the Portland-based startup will continue to operate as usual. In a blog post announcing the change, CEO Josh Reich states:

"...we will function as a separate business within the BBVA structure, operating in parallel with BBVA's existing US banking operations. Furthermore, I'm remaining in my role as CEO and will be joined by the same team that built Simple over the past four years."

The largest change, Reich states, will be that Simple will have BBVA's backing of $280 billion in assets that will enable it to grow and continue innovating.

SumUp is coming to America - one hemisphere at a time.

The European mobile payments company is expected to reach South American shores by the end of the year, according to a report in TechCrunch published today.

News of the expansion comes as SumUp announced receiving funding from BBVA Ventures, the venture capital wing of Spanish bank, BBVA. The amount of BBVA's investment was undisclosed, but it is believed to be part of the larger investment of more than $20 million announced by SumUp in May. That round included participation by investors ranging from American Express to Groupon to Tengelmann Ventures.

Thumbnail image for BBVALogo.jpg
Funding from BBVA will contribute toward SumUp's growth into South America, as well as help extend the brand in European countries like Spain and Portugal, where BBVA is strong. SumUp also recently announced expansion into Russia.

Both BBVA and SumUp are alumni of FinovateEurope 2013, held earlier this year in London. BBVA demoed Stockbuzz.es, technology that analyzes Twitter data for clues to market sentiment. SumUp presented its mobile payments solution, which makes it easier for small businesses to accept card payments.

See BBVA's presentation here. SumUp's demo is available here.

We recently returned from the Bank Innovation conference in San Francisco, where the 2013 Bank Innovation awards were presented on Monday afternoon.

A panel of judges selected BBVA and Fidor Bank AG as 2 of 4 companies whose innovations made a difference in 2012.

BBVABBVALogo.jpg
BBVA won for its BBVA Game that uses gamification to incent clients to use its banking services. Elements of the game include points, badges, and a leaderboard that come together in a virtual economy. In the 6 months since its launch, more than 100k customers have signed up. Watch the demo video of BBVA debuting its new Stockbuzz program at FinovateEurope 2013.

fidorLogo.jpg

Fidor Bank AG
Fidor Bank AG won for Like-Zins, a user-generated interest rate program. For every 2,000 Facebook likes that Fidor receives, it raises the interest rate on FidorPay checking accounts by 10 basis points per year (with a cap of 15% per year). So far, the Facebook community has increased the accounts by 50-70 basis points. Fidor demoed at FinovateEurope 2011.

Also among the winners are:

  • Long-time Finovate sponsor The Bancorp Bank, which is the financial institution that backs both Moven and Simple.
  • SaverNation, a company that helps users fund their retirement by saving small percentages of their normal purchases.

See Bank Innovation's full coverage of all of the winners here.

SimpleLogo.jpgLooking for the best in fintech innovation? According to American Banker, there's a Finovate alum (or three) for that.

Simple, Pageonce, and BBVA Compass were featured in a slide show highlighting the "top ten most progressive mobile banking apps."

Thumbnail image for Pageonce Logo.jpg
How did these three make American Banker's short list? According to the reviewers, "account application features, design, and ease of use" were among the main factors that helped distinguish the top ten (including these three Finovate alumni) from the rest of the mobile banking app field.

Watch Simple's most recent Finovate demo here. And Pageonce's presentation at FinovateSpring 2010 is here

The final demo for the first session today is BBVA, who showed how its tool can assess whether views of the stock market expressed in Twitter correlate with actual market behavior:

"To find out if the "market sentiment" expressed in Twitter is correlated with actual market behavior, we at BBVA have launched Stockbuzz (www.stockbuzz.es). This is a site where the user can view the sentiment that Twitter users feel on the Ibex 35 and the securities that make up the index, and compare it with their actual share price on the stock exchange.

The website is user friendly, easily understandable and attractive. It shows graphs and data based on the information that is posted on Twitter, but also promotes interaction with this social network, as it contains a section where site visitors can leave their own messages on the analyzed stocks."

Product Launch: December 2012

HQ: Madrid, Spain
Founded: January 1857
Metrics: 117,500 employees, over 30 countries, more than 47M customers, 900,000 shareholders

Everyone knows the importance of social networks in the financial world. Millions publicly discuss their experiences with the different brands they interact with throughout the day. It also applies to the financial markets. Investors, large or small, share their views on the main market securities and how emerging news influences their trading.

And of all the social networks, Twitter is probably the most widely used for this type of analysis. But, is there any chance to analyse the conversations about stocks and to obtain a sentiment? We will show you that is possible.

Innovation type: Online

In addition to being a secure personal data management tool and the "point of payment choice" for users, Dashlane offers financial services and ecommerce partners a privileged seat next to the user during all their online transactions.

Innovation type: Payments, security

Big Data. Pretty much the two words that are on everyone's lips, but much harder to actually put into action... until now, that is.
